NIFTY50, SENSEX end lower as heavyweight Tata Group stocks drag losses; TCS, Tata Consumer among top laggards

Stock market today: The equity market indices, NIFTY50 and SENSEX, ended lower after the trading session on Wednesday, August 12, as the heavyweight Tata Group stocks dragged down the benchmark indices, with companies like TCS and Tata Consumer among others emerging as top laggards.

NSE data showed that the NIFTY50 index closed 0.15% lower at 24,435.95 points after Wednesday’s trading session, compared to 24,471 points at the previous stock market close.

The BSE SENSEX index closed 0.24% lower at 77,966.35 points after the trading session on August 12, in comparison to 78,154.25 points at the previous equity market close, as per the exchange data.

Investors were also focused on the elevated crude oil prices and the CPI inflation data, which indicated that prices in the economy increased, driven by higher food-related costs in July 2026.

As per government data, India’s consumer price index (CPI) inflation inched up to 4.45% in July 2026, largely driven by higher food prices in the period. Food inflation in July increased to 5.52% from 5.32% in the preceding month, according to CPI data released by the National Statistics Office (NSO).

Global benchmark Brent crude oil prices showed that energy rates surged to more than $90 per barrel (bbl) and were trading at $89.13 per bbl as of 4:47 pm (IST), compared to $88.91 per bbl at the previous commodity market close.

Top gainers & losers on August 12

Stocks like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Max Healthcare, Apollo Hospitals, Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Consumer Products, Tata Motors PV, Eternal, and Infosys were among the top laggards on August 12, 2026.

TCS lost 4%, Max Healthcare lost 3%, Apollo Hospitals lost 1.7%, Mahindra & Mahindra lost 1.6%, Tata Consumer Products lost 1.4%, Tata Motors PV lost 1.3%, Eternal lost 1.2%, and Infosys lost 1.2% after the trading session on Wednesday.

Hindalco, Bharti Airtel, State Bank of India, Jio Financial Services, Ultratech Cements, InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo), and Nestle India were among the top gainers.

While others like Hindalco gained 3%, Bharti Airtel gained 1.5%, State Bank of India gained 1.5%, Jio Financial gained 1.3%, Ultratech Cements gained 1%, IndiGo gained 0.9%, and Nestle India gained 0.9% as of the stock market close.

Out of the 50 stocks listed on NSE, 17 stocks ended in the green, while the remaining 30 stocks ended in the red zone.
