Coal India supplies rise 5.5% to 60.6 MT in August FY27; shares in focus

Coal India shares will be on the investors’ radar after the state-owned company on Tuesday, September 1, said its total coal supplies increased 5.5% to 60.60 million tonnes (MT) in August FY 2026–27 as compared to 57.40 MT supplied during the corresponding month last year.

The company also recorded a 4.5% growth in coal supplies to the power sector during the month, reaching 48.46 MT, compared to 46.39 MT in August FY26. Coal supplies to the non-regulated sector (NRS) also registered robust growth, increasing by 9.6% to 12.12 MT in August FY27 from 11.06 MT in the same period of the last fiscal year.

Coal India’s total coal supplies during the first five months of the current financial year till August reached 322.90 MT, compared to 302.60 MT during the corresponding period of the previous year, registering a growth of 6.70%.

The higher supplies also enabled Coal India to liquidate around 55 MT of pithead coal stocks during the first five months of FY 2026–27.

“With approximately 76 MT of coal currently available at its pitheads, CIL has sufficient inventory to support power generation requirements in the coming months. As the intense rainy spells gradually recede and drier months approach, the company is preparing itself to ramp up both production and supplies,” the company said in a regulatory filing.

Coal India Q1 earnings

The state-owned company reported a marginal increase of 0.63% in its consolidated net profit at ₹8,852 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, of financial year 2026-27 (Q1 FY27). Its net profit attributable to the owners for the same quarter in the last fiscal year was ₹8.797 crore.

The company’s revenue from operations for Q1 FY27 grew 8% to ₹46,255 crore as against ₹42,919 crore reported in the corresponding quarter last fiscal year.

Coal India’s operating profit, also known as earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), decreased 4% to ₹12,069 crore for Q1 FY27 as compared to ₹12,588 crore in Q1 FY26. The margin for the quarter under review contracted to 26.09% in contrast to 29.33% year on year (YoY).

Coal India share price trends

On Tuesday, Coal India shares ended at ₹401.6 apiece on the National Stock Exchange, falling marginally 0.04%.

From the beginning of the year, Coal India shares have gained 0.5%. Over a month’s time, the stock has slipped 3%, while for a six-month period, it has declined 6%.

Shares of the firm had hit a 52-week high of ₹491.25 on April 30, 2026, and a 52-week low of ₹369.60 on November 25, 2025.

According to NSE data, as of September 1, 2026, Coal India has a total market capitalisation of ₹2.47 lakh crore.
