Auto stocks: Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors, M&M shares in focus on August auto sales updates

Auto stocks: Shares of auto companies, including Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors CV, TVS Motor Company, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M), Eicher Motors, Ashok Leyland, Maruti Suzuki, and more, were on investors' radar on Tuesday, September 1, as automakers began releasing their August 2026 sales figures.

The NIFTY Auto index, which is designed to reflect the behaviour and performance of the Indian automobiles sector, surged as much as 0.86% to hit an intraday high of 29,090.30, compared with the closing of 28,841.50 in Monday’s session.

However, at around 12:32 PM, the index was trading 0.37% or 107.55 points lower at 28,733.95. While the index has fallen 2% in the past week, it has advanced 11% over the past three months. It has risen 2% in the last six months and 1% on a year-to-date (YTD) basis.

Out of the 16 stocks constituting the index, seven advanced and eight declined at the time of writing.

Maruti Suzuki, Bosch, Samvardhana Motherson International, Bharat Forge and Ashok Leyland were among the top losers.

On the contrary, the top gainers in the NIFTY Auto index included Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV), UNO Minda, and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M).

Here is how auto stocks were performing on September 1

Hero MotoCorp

Shares of Hero MotoCorp climbed as much as 3.8% to hit an intraday high of ₹5,659 per unit on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Tuesday, September 1, as against the previous session’s closing price of ₹5,450 apiece, ahead of the release of its monthly sales report.

At the time of writing, the stock stood at ₹5,618.50 per equity share, reflecting a 3.09% increase.

According to a regulatory filing dated August 28, the company informed the exchanges that it completed the purchase of 1.19 crore equity shares in Ather, its associate company, for a total consideration of about ₹1,758 crore.

Following this transaction, its shareholding in Ather stood at approximately 32.8% of the shares, on a fully diluted basis.

Bajaj Auto

The stock of Bajaj Auto advanced as much as 2.8% to touch the session’s peak of ₹12,470 per equity share on the NSE, compared with Monday’s closing price of ₹12,130 per unit. At the time of writing, the scrip was trading at ₹12,397 apiece, up by 2.20%.

The automaker reported a 28% year-on-year (YoY) increase in total sales to 5,35,764 units in August 2026, compared to 4,17,616 units in August 2025, bolstered by export expansion, according to a regulatory filing.

Its export sales stood at 2,80.056 units, marking a 51% YoY jump from 1,85,218 units in the year-ago period. Furthermore, the company’s domestic sales rose 10% YoY to 2,55,708 units during the month under review, in comparison to 2,32,398 units in August 2025.

Tata Motors CV

Tata Motors CV shares declined as much as 2.3% to hit an intraday low of ₹460.05 apiece, despite reporting a 49% YoY increase in its sales in the domestic and international markets for August 2026, which stood at 44,411 units against 29,863 units during August 2025.

The domestic sales of MH&ICV in August 2026 were 17,531 units, as against 13,405 units in August 2025, registering a growth of 31% YoY.

Meanwhile, the domestic and international sales for MH&ICV in August 2026 stood at 18,920 units, up 29% YoY from 14,667 units in August 2025.

Hyundai Motor India

Hyundai Motor India stock climbed as much as 0.34% to hit the session’s peak of ₹2,212.40 apiece on the NSE on September 1, after it recorded an 8.8% surge in its total monthly sales (domestic and exports) at 65,796 units in August 2026

Its total sales comprised domestic sales of 54,396 units, up 23.6% YoY, and exports of 11,400 units.

Maruti Suzuki India

Shares of Maruti Suzuki India fell as much as 3.7% to hit an intraday low of ₹13,040 per unit, compared to the previous closing price of ₹13,547 apiece, after the company reported that it sold a total of 219,220 vehicles in August 2026, up 21.32% YoY. In August 2025, it had sold 180,683 units.

Its total sales for the reporting month include domestic sales of 180,078 units, sales to other OEMs of 5,298 units, and exports of 33,844 units.

The company surpassed the milestone of 1 million units in total sales within the first five months of FY 2026-27, Maruti Suzuki India said in an exchange filing.
