The state-owned firm reported an increase of 53% in its consolidated net profit at ₹6,516 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, of financial year 2026-27 (Q2 FY27). Its net profit attributable to the owners for the same quarter in the last fiscal year was at ₹4,259 crore.

The company’s revenue from operations for Q2 FY27 grew 21% to ₹44,179 crore as against ₹36,553 crore reported in the corresponding quarter last fiscal year.

Its operating profit, also known as earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA), jumped 29% to ₹8,499 crore for Q2 FY27 as compared to ₹6,593 crore in Q2 FY26. The margin for the quarter under review expanded to 19.24% in contrast to 18.04% year-on-year (YoY).

For half a year (H1 FY27), Coal India’s net profit jumped to ₹15,368 crore as compared to ₹13,056 crore on a YoY basis, marking a growth of 18%. Its revenue from operations for H1 FY27 surged 14% to ₹90,434 crore as against ₹79,472 crore in H1 FY26.

Here’s what analysts said

Analysts from HSBC said strong power demand, low coal inventories and rising regional coal prices could support higher e-auction realisations for Coal India. They forecast a dividend of ₹30.9 per share for FY27 and noted that stake sales in subsidiaries could lead to additional payouts.

The analysts also highlighted the potential listings of MCL and SECL, which could provide dividend upside but may result in a holding-company discount.

Jefferies analysts noted that Coal India’s cash EBITDA rose 29% YoY in Q2, while PAT increased 53% and dispatch volumes grew 12%. They highlighted that coal inventories at power plants had declined to six days, compared with the 10-year average of 15 days.

The analysts expect Coal India to deliver a 7% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in earnings per share (EPS) over FY26–FY29 and noted that its dividend yield of around 7% supports total returns.

In a note on Friday, Morgan Stanley analysts said strong thermal power demand and coal inventories at five-year lows support an earnings upgrade cycle for Coal India. They noted that elevated global coal prices could lead to higher e-auction premiums and realisations. The analysts also expect the demand recovery to be sustained, supported by low coal stocks at power plants and rising international coal prices.
