As per a report in PTI, Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said testing for the new facility has been completed, and EPFO subscribers may soon be able to transfer eligible PF balances instantly into their bank accounts using UPI.

What is changing for EPFO members?

Currently, EPFO subscribers must submit a withdrawal claim application and wait for processing before receiving money.

Under the proposed UPI-based system:
  • Members will be able to check the withdrawable PF balance online

  • Eligible amounts can be transferred directly into linked bank accounts

  • Transactions will be authenticated using a UPI PIN

  • Funds can then be used immediately for digital payments or ATM withdrawals

According to the labour ministry, the system is designed to make PF access faster, easier and more user-friendly.

How will EPF withdrawal through UPI work?

The proposed process is expected to function in a few simple steps:
  • Members will be able to view the portion of their EPF savings available for withdrawal.

  • The bank account seeded with EPFO records will be used for transfer.

  • Users will enter their UPI PIN to authorise the transaction securely.

  • The approved amount will be credited directly to the bank account.

The labour ministry has indicated that a certain portion of the EPF corpus may remain frozen while the remaining eligible amount becomes accessible through UPI withdrawals.

The new facility could significantly reduce waiting time and paperwork associated with PF withdrawals.

What is the process at present?

  • Members often face delays during claim processing

  • Manual verification may be required in some cases

  • Accessing emergency funds can become cumbersome

The proposed UPI-based system aims to make PF access more similar to digital banking services that users already rely on daily.

Auto-settlement limit already increased

Withdrawal claims under the auto-settlement mode are processed electronically without manual intervention, often within three days.

The claim limit under this system has been increased from ₹1 lakh to ₹5 lakh.

This applies to withdrawals related to illness, education, marriage, housing needs

EPFO also planning WhatsApp Services

The EPFO is also preparing to launch WhatsApp-based member support services within a month, news agency PTI reported.

Under the proposed system:
  • Members can send a simple “Hello” message to EPFO’s verified WhatsApp account

  • Services will be available in local and vernacular languages

  • Users can check PF balances, claim status and recent transactions

  • Automated assistance will be available 24/7

The initiative is expected to help members who face issues related to Aadhaar authentication or Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) activation.
