Showrooms across the city are expected to remain open for extended hours into the evening today and tomorrow to cater to the Dhanteras gold rush.

For the lightweight jewellery buyers, the arithmetic is gentler than the headlines suggest. The price of 18 karat gold rose ₹242 a gram, or 2.26%, and a 4 gram pendant that was ₹43,000 on Wednesday is about ₹43,970 now. On the same day, a 40 gram 22 karat set moved by nearly ₹12,000. The last four sessions of gains have added ₹714 a gram above the ₹13,888 of November 1 and past the ₹14,395 of October 29.

Amid higher gold prices, buyers prefer lighter, design-heavy pieces in 18 and 22 karats, while 24 karat largely remains confined to coins and gifting. Bridal sets in the 22 karat is still the single biggest purchase category.

Please note, the prices above are indicative and may on appear on your final bill because the making charges and 3% GST have not been included. Moreover, rates may vary by a few rupees at each store. So compare before you commit. For instance, a 10-gram 22 karat piece with 10% making charges attracts GST of ₹4,417, taking the total to about ₹1,51,652.

One should ask about exchange terms as well if you intend to trade in old gold. This is because the deduction for making charges is often the largest single variable in the transaction. Buyers should also confirm the BIS hallmark with a six-digit HUID on the new piece before leaving the counter.
