Why do people buy silver on Dhanteras?

Buying silver on Dhanteras is considered auspicious in Hindu tradition. The festival, also known as Dhantrayodashi, is associated with Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth and prosperity, and Lord Dhanvantari, who is associated with health and Ayurveda.

Many households believe that bringing home precious metals on Dhanteras invites prosperity, good fortune and abundance.

While gold jewellery remains a popular purchase, silver coins, utensils, idols and other articles are also traditionally bought on the occasion.
