Stock market today: The equity benchmark indices ended with losses on Friday, January 24, led by selling in index heavyweights such as Reliance Industries (RIL), HDFC Bank, and M&M.

At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at 76,190.46 levels, down 329.92 points, or 0.43%, while the NSE's NIFTY50 index ended at 23,092.20, down 113.15 points, or 0.49%.

With today's fall, the headline indices logged losses for the third straight week.

The drop on Friday was in contrast to global markets, which were buoyed by the prospect of a softer US stance on tariffs on China and lower interest rates following comments from President Donald Trump, as per a Reuters report.

For the week, the 30-share index of the BSE lost 0.5%, while the NSE's NIFTY50 index shed 0.47%.

As per analysts, investors are likely to maintain caution ahead of the upcoming Union Budget announcement.

Here is a look at the key developments in today's session.

Top gainers and losers

As many as 19 stocks on the NIFTY50 gained while 31 stocks declined in the trade.

The top five gainers were HUL, Britannia Industries, Eicher Motors, Grasim Industries, and ICICI Bank.
The top five losers were Dr Reddy's, Trent, M&M, Adani Enterprises, and BPCL.

Market Statistics

As many as 4,059 stocks traded on the BSE, 2,902 declined and 1,038 advanced while 119 scrips remained unchanged.

A total of 79 stocks hit their 52-week highs on the BSE while 162 shares touched their one-year low levels.

Further, as many as seven stocks hit their upper circuit limits and four scrips touched their lower circuits.

Stocks in news

Shares of global intelligent engineering services provider Cyient tanked in the trade after the company posted a 31.56% fall in its net profit to ₹127.7 crore in Q3 FY25 compared to ₹186.6 crore in the previous quarter.

Year-on-year, the profit after tax declined 16.64%.

Revenue from operations stood at ₹1,909.8 crore, growing 0.5% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ) and 3.78% YoY.

Karthikeyan Natarajan also resigned as executive director and chief executive officer of the company effective immediately to "explore new challenges and opportunities," he said in his resignation letter as per an exchange filing.

Broader Market

The BSE SmallCap index ended at 50,107.51, down 1,142.78 points, or 2.23%, while the BSE MidCap index settled at 42,715.63, down 693.03, or 1.60%.

Sector Watch

All sectoral indices on the BSE ended in the red. The biggest losers were realty stocks, followed by industrials and healthcare.

The BSE REALTY index settled at 6,716.72, down 172.54 points, or 2.50%.
