Top gainers and losers, September 9: Infosys, HDFC LIC drop 4%, Adani Enterprises jumps 5%; check list

On September 9, both benchmark indices closed at their intraday lows, with the SENSEX ending at 74,764.23, reflecting an 813.35-point or 1.08% decline. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 closed lower by 203.60 points or 0.86% at 23,431.50.

Top gainers and losers: The Indian benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, closed in the red zone for the third consecutive session on Wednesday, September 9, as the escalating tensions in West Asia led global crude oil prices to soar past the $100 per barrel mark.

Investor sentiment was also impacted by a sell-off in information technology (IT) and realty stocks, weak global cues and FII outflows.

On Tuesday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹123.19 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities worth ₹1,349.64 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data.

Additionally, the India VIX, the volatility gauge, spiked 8% during Wednesday’s trading session.

On September 9, both benchmark indices closed at their intraday lows, with the SENSEX ending at 74,764.23, reflecting an 813.35-point or 1.08% decline. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 closed lower by 203.60 points or 0.86% at 23,431.50.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

The 50-share NIFTY index was dragged down by selling in the shares of Infosys, which closed 4.34% lower. Infosys stock declined amid a fall in IT stocks.

It was followed by HDFC Life Insurance Company (-3.71%), HCL Technologies (-3.70%), Tech Mahindra (-3.27%) and Wipro (-2.62%), which were among the top losers of the day.

On the other hand, the top gainers included Adani Enterprises, which ended 5.13% higher, as Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises Limited (AEL) and one of India's largest private airport operators, has entered into binding agreements to raise ₹9,825 crore (nearly $1 billion) of primary equity capital from a consortium of investors.

The other gainers were Max Healthcare Institute (4.48%), Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (3.80%), Coal India (2.56%) and Tata Steel (2.50%).

NIFTY Midcap 100 top gainers and losers

NSE’s midcap gauge, the NIFTY Midcap 100, fell by 323 points, or 0.51%, to close at 62,592.80 on Wednesday.

The top laggards included Coforge, which closed 5.38% lower, after O.P. Bhatt resigned as the company’s Non-Executive Independent Director and Chairperson with immediate effect on September 8.

The resignation followed concerns raised during an internal audit review of the board evaluation process, including the disclosure of certain material information relating to the Board Evaluation Report and the Chairperson’s performance.

It was followed by Tata Elxsi (-3.12%), BSE (-3.07%), Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services (-2.62%) and Godrej Properties (-2.60%).

On the flip side, One 97 Communications (Paytm) ended 4.88% higher. The stock hit its 52-week high on September 9, after a report suggested that the fintech firm is expanding into a new business, jumping on the agentic AI bandwagon to accelerate a rebound in revenue growth.

People with knowledge of the matter told Bloomberg that Paytm will start selling artificial intelligence agents to enterprise customers, betting on rising demand for such bots that can automatically handle a variety of workloads and tasks with minimal supervision.

Responding to the report, Paytm, in a regulatory filing, said, “We wish to clarify that the Company has been investing in and developing artificial intelligence capabilities as part of its ongoing business initiatives, including a possible ‘revenue optimization journey of AI’, as previously disclosed in the earnings release for Q1 FY27.”

“The media report neither relates to any undisclosed event or information which is material nor requires disclosure by the Company under Regulation 30 read with Schedule III of the SEBI (Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements) Regulations, 2015,” it further added.

The other top winners included Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) (2.74%), Swiggy (2.56%), Cochin Shipyard (1.82%) and National Aluminium Company (1.77%).

NIFTY Smallcap 100 top gainers and losers

The NIFTY Smallcap 100 ended at 20,036.90, reflecting a 96.85-point or 0.48% decline on September 9.

The top losers were Brigade Enterprises (-4.24%), IFCI Ltd (-3.79%), Netweb Technologies India (-3.72%), Piramal Pharma (-3.61%) and Neuland Laboratories (-3.52%).

On the contrary, Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (6.38%), Aegis Logistics (5.75%), Sarda Energy & Minerals (5.32%), Pine Labs (3.24%) and Meesho (2.81%) were among the top gainers.
