The NIFTY Midcap 100 closed at 57,345.50, up 0.65% or 368.10 points. Meanwhile, the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index settled 0.89%, or 157.15 points, higher at 17,748.45 on Wednesday, September 3.

Top gainers and losers: The Indian benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, closed in positive territory on Wednesday, September 3, amid a rally in metal stocks and hopes for lower GST rates for a host of essential and daily-use items as the two-day GST Council meeting began today.

The 30-share BSE SENSEX jumped 409.83 points, or 0.51%, to settle at 80,567.71. Meanwhile, the NSE's NIFTY50 index climbed 135.45 points, or 0.55%, to 24,715.05.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

The NIFTY50 pack was bolstered by gains in Tata Steel, which surged 5.96% to close at ₹167.83 apiece.

Metal stocks surged as the 58th GST meet began on September 3, on the back of reports that China is looking to cut steel production.

Tata Steel was followed by Hindalco Industries (3.02%), JSW Steel (2.94%), Coal India (2.45%), and IndusInd Bank (2.21%), which were among the top gainers on Wednesday.

On the other hand, shares of Infosys settled 1.25% lower at ₹1,480 apiece. The IT major was the biggest loser on the index. The other notable losers included Nestlé India (-0.72%), HDFC Life Insurance Company (-0.70%), Wipro (-0.55%), and NTPC (-0.54%).

NIFTY Midcap 100 top gainers and losers

NSE’s midcap index, the NIFTY Midcap 100, closed at 57,345.50, up 0.65% or 368.10 points, propelled by buying in Ola Electric Mobility, which advanced by 10.52%. The EV stock has been trading in the green since it secured Production Linked Incentive (PLI) certification for its Gen 3 scooter portfolio.

It was followed by gains in Steel Authority of India (5.26%), Glenmark Pharmaceuticals (4.60%), Yes Bank (3.99%), and Muthoot Finance (3.57%).

On the contrary, shares of Phoenix Mills settled 3.21% lower, leading the losses. It was followed by MRF (-2.23%), Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (-2.18%), Indus Towers (-1.50%), and Colgate Palmolive (-1.44%), which were the top laggards.

NIFTY Smallcap 100 top gainers and losers

NSE’s small-cap gauge, the NIFTY Smallcap 100, settled 0.89%, or 157.15 points, higher at 17,748.45. The gain was led by Piramal Pharma (7.59%), Neuland Laboratories (5.62%), Inventurus Knowledge Solutions (5.56%), Hindustan Copper (4.71%), and ITI Ltd (4.34%), which were among the top winners.

On the flipside, Aster DM Healthcare (-1.91%), Zensar Technologies (-1.77%), Ircon International (-1.76%), KEC International (-1.50%), and Zen Technologies (-1.39%) were among the top losers.
