Top gainers and losers, Aug 19: Max Healthcare, Coal India fall 2%, HCLTech jumps 2%; check list

Top gainers and losers: The Indian benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, closed in negative territory for the seventh consecutive session on Wednesday, August 19, amid a sell-off in defence and energy stocks.

Furthermore, investor sentiment remained subdued as crude oil prices and bond yields surged. Brent crude futures rose over $92 per barrel (bbl) amid supply uncertainty, as conflicting messages from Iran and the United States on whether the Strait of Hormuz is open for transit weighed on oil prices.

The SENSEX dropped as much as 0.53% to hit an intraday low of 76,822.89. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 declined as much as 0.54% to touch the session’s low of 24,025.65.

On August 19, the SENSEX declined by 325.78 points or 0.42% to close at 76,909.68. Similarly, the NIFTY50 ended lower by 76.60 points or 0.32% at 24,078.30.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

The 50-share NIFTY index was dragged down by selling in the shares of Max Healthcare Institute, which closed 1.72% lower.

It was followed by Coal India (-1.70%), Power Grid Corporation of India (-1.68%), Bajaj Finance (-1.29%) and ITC Ltd (-1.09%), which were among the top losers of the day.

On the other hand, the top gainers were led by HCL Technologies (2.06%), JSW Steel (1.44%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.33%), Eternal (1.30%) and Wipro (0.84%).

Shares of HCL Technologies and Wipro advanced amid a surge in information technology (IT) stocks today.

NIFTY Midcap 100 top gainers and losers

NSE’s midcap gauge, the NIFTY Midcap 100, fell by 130.65 points, or 0.21%, to close at 63,408.75 on Wednesday.

Hitachi Energy India (-4.18%), Bharat Dynamics (-3.16%), L&T Finance (-2.98%), Page Industries (-2.72%) and Glenmark Pharmaceuticals (-2.54%) were among the top laggards.

On the flip side, its top winners included ICICI Prudential Asset Management Company (5.92%), One 97 Communications (2.41%), Coforge (2.26%), Dixon Technologies (2.20%) and FSN E-Commerce Ventures (2.11%).

Shares of One97 Communications, the parent firm of Paytm, advanced on Wednesday, August 19, as a clutch of foreign and domestic institutional investors, including Goldman Sachs, BNP Paribas, and Societe Generale, together on Tuesday bought a 3% stake in the fintech firm for ₹2,949 crore through open market transactions.

Other foreign investors that bought shares included Ghisallo Capital Management, Oxbow Capital Management, North Rock Capital Management, Viridian Asset Management, Vittoria Fund-OC - a hedge fund owned by Pathstone Family Office LLC, and Integrated Core Strategies (Asia) Pte Ltd.

NIFTY Smallcap 100 top gainers and losers

The NIFTY Smallcap 100 ended at 19,707.15, down by 101.70 points or 0.51% on August 19.

It was weighed down by Netweb Technologies (-5.34%), Himadri Speciality Chemical (-4.06%), Brainbees Solutions (-3.64%), Godawari Power And Ispat (-3.61%) and Five-Star Business Finance (-3.52%), which were among the top losers.

On the contrary, its top gainers included Kaynes Technology India (4.92%), Firstsource Solutions (3.66%), Welspun Corp (2.81%), Jyoti CNC Automation (2.78%) and PNB Housing Finance (2.46%).
