SENSEX hit a day low of 76,823 today. Among the NIFTY50 stocks, Coal India (-1.8%), Power Grid (-1.8%) and Bajaj Finance (-1.3%) were the top three losers.

Broader market indices like NIFTY Midcap100 (-0.2%) and NIFTY Smallcap100 (-0.4%) are also trading lower. 110 stocks hit their 52-week low today as investors did profit booking amid weak market sentiment.

The volatility index, or India VIX, is up 0.9% to 11.49. Except for NIFTY IT (+0.4%), all other sectoral indices are trading in the red, with NIFTY FMCG (-0.6%), NIFTY Financial Services (-0.5%) being the top sectoral losers.

Why are NIFTY50 and SENSEX down today?

Brent Crude rose above $92: International oil prices rose for a fourth consecutive session as Brent Crude Oil traded near $92 per barrel amid a standoff between the US and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of the world’s oil consumption passes on a daily basis.

Currently, commercial oil shipments through Hormuz remain at a fraction of pre-war levels due to the US-Iran war, leading to a consistent surge in oil prices in the past few days. Rising oil prices impact the Indian economy as India imports nearly 90% of its domestic crude consumption.

Sell-off in index heavyweight stocks: High-weightage stocks in the NIFTY50 index like HDFC Bank, ITC, ICICI Bank, Reliance Industries and others saw selling pressure today, which dragged down the overall index and investors' sentiments.
Rising US bond yield: The yield on the US 10-year Treasury note stood at around 4.7% on Wednesday, retreating from recent highs as investors awaited the minutes of the Federal Reserve’s July meeting for fresh insights into the monetary policy outlook.

Rising bond yields attract more investors as their risk-free return increases, which in turn can lead to a downturn in markets as foreign investors could sell off their risky investments and move towards bonds.
