Investor sentiment was impacted by elevated global crude oil prices, amid uncertainty regarding the re-opening of the Strait of Hormuz, following doubts over a potential US-Iran peace deal and attacks on two ships.
The SENSEX tumbled as much as 0.84% to hit an intraday low of 77,497.93. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 dropped as much as 0.84% to touch the session’s low of 24,265.95.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) shares weighed down the NIFTY50 index, as they closed 3.93% lower.
The stock, along with other Tata Group company shares, came under selling pressure as Tata Sons’ Chairman N Chandrasekaran resigned from his current position on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, highlighting that the industry veteran will not seek a re-appointment at the end of his current term, keeping investors' uncertainty elevated about the next successor for the company.
Tata Sons is the principal investment holding company of the $400-billion Tata Group.
It was followed by Max Healthcare Institute (-3.13%), Apollo Hospitals Enterprise (-1.75%), Mahindra & Mahindra (-1.63%) and Tata Consumer Products (-1.49%), which were among the other top losers of the day.
On the other hand, the top gainers included Hindalco Industries (2.80%), Bharti Airtel (1.56%), State Bank of India (SBI) (1.50%), Jio Financial Services (1.31%) and UltraTech Cement (0.94%).
The sharp reduction is due to a reduced supply of natural gas, propelling aluminium prices to a seven-week high.
The impact, as noted by news reports and analysts, is broadly positive for Indian aluminium producers because the disruption in Brazil could tighten global alumina supply and push aluminium prices higher. Aluminium prices have already moved to a seven-week high following the news.
NSE’s NIFTY midcap gauge, the Midcap 100, ended 0.28% or 180.55 points higher at 64,024.40 on August 12.
The other top winners were National Aluminium Company (8.25%), Vodafone Idea (4.73%), Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) (4.22%), Indus Towers (3.80%) and Astral (2.74%).
On the flip side, PI Industries (-9.05%), Fortis Healthcare (-3.76%), Premier Energies (-2.28%), Tata Elxsi (-2.19%) and BSE (-2.16%) were among the top laggards.
The NIFTY Smallcap 100 closed at 19,821.65, down by 35.50 points or 0.18%.
The top losers included Cohance Lifesciences (-4.50%), Redington (-4.09%), Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (-3.83%), Wockhardt (-3.37%) and Deepak Fertilizers and Petrochemicals Corporation (-3.04%).
On the contrary, Aarti Industries (5.47%), Force Motors (5.12%), Ather Energy (3.09%), Kaynes Technology India (2.97%) and Hindustan Copper (2.85%) were among the top gainers.
