SENSEX gains 500 pts, NIFTY above 26,100 in noon deals; Vedanta, Infosys, Shriram Finance among buzzing stocks

The Indian benchmark indices, SENSEX and NIFTY50, surged during Monday’s afternoon session, bolstered by a strong rally in IT and metal stocks. It was further supported by positive global cues and foreign fund inflows, which added to investor optimism.

On Friday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) bought stocks worth ₹1,830.89 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth ₹5,722.89 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data.

Furthermore, the volatility gauge, India VIX, on December 22, hit a two-year low of 8.86 as equity benchmark indices were trading higher.

The SENSEX advanced as much as 0.63% to an intra-day high of 85,467.39. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 touched the session’s high of 26,154.45.

At 12:29 PM, the S&P BSE SENSEX advanced by 505.69 points, or 0.60%, to 85,435.05. NSE’s NIFTY50 was trading at 26,144.20, marking a 177.80 points, or 0.68% jump.

The top gainers of the NIFTY50 index included Shriram Finance (4.91%), Wipro (3.04%), Infosys (2.65%), Bharti Airtel (2.25%) and Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (2.24%).

On the flipside, State Bank of India (-0.66%), SBI Life Insurance Company (-0.55%), Tata Consumer Products (-0.41%), HDFC Life Insurance Company (-0.40%) and Cipla (-0.29%) were among the top losers.

Buzzing stocks on December 22: Check list

Jupiter Wagons

Shares of Jupiter Wagons soared as much as 14.75% to an intraday high of ₹298.65 apiece on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Monday, December 22, as promoter Tatravagonka acquired an additional stake in the firm worth ₹135 crore.

“We, TATRAVAGONKA a. s. (the Company), wish to inform you that the Company has acquired 2,872,340 equity shares of Jupiter Wagons Limited. The said equity shares are acquired pursuant to the conversion of 2,872,340 convertible warrants issued on June 29, 2024, by Jupiter Wagons Limited,” the regulatory filing said.

Railway stocks

Shares of railway stocks, including IRFC, BEML, RVNL, RailTel, RITES, Texmaco, Titagarh, and more, surged on the NSE on Monday, after the Indian Railway revised the fare structure.

Train ticket prices will be increased by 2 paise per kilometer for mail and express non-AC coaches and AC classes, while the fare for ordinary class journeys beyond 215 km will be increased by 1 paise per km. Furthermore, a 500 km non-AC journey will cost ₹10 extra. However, there will be no hike in ticket prices for suburban services and monthly season tickets, and no increase in fare for ordinary class journeys up to 215 km.

Infosys

Infosys' stock surged as much as 3.32% to the session’s peak of ₹1,693.20 per equity share, after a US court gave its final approval for the proposed settlement of class action lawsuits against Infosys McCamish.

Under the proposed terms, Infosys McCamish Systems had agreed to pay $17.5 million into a fund to settle all the pending class action lawsuits related to a cybersecurity incident in 2023, which identified the Infosys subsidiary as the main source.

If the settlement is not appealed within 30 days, "it will become effective and resolve all allegations made in the class action lawsuits without admission of any liability," Infosys said in a regulatory filing on Saturday.

In a separate filing, Infosys on Saturday, December 20, said the company has observed volatility in the price of its American Depositary Receipt (“ADR”) on the New York Stock Exchange (“NYSE”) on December 19, 2025, which resulted in two Volatility Trading Pauses (“Limit Up-Limit Down”/“LULD”) being triggered by NYSE.

Vedanta

Vedanta shares gained 2.21% to hit a 52-week high of ₹594.50 per unit, as investor confidence was lifted by a series of positive developments.

The demerger of Vedanta into separate listed entities is designed to sharpen focus, unlock value and keep cash returns flowing without interrupting its capital expenditure cycle, Vedanta Group chairman Anil Agarwal told PTI in an interview.

The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) last week had approved the plan to split Vedanta into five different listed entities. After the demerger, the base metals business will be housed in Vedanta Ltd, while Vedanta Aluminium, Talwandi Sabo Power, Vedanta Steel and Iron and Malco Energy, housing the oil and gas business, will be the other four listed entities.

Varun Beverages

Shares of Varun Beverages, PepsiCo's largest franchise bottler, gained up to 2.53% to ₹481.30 apiece on the NSE.

This comes as the company announced on Sunday that it will completely acquire South Africa-based firm Twizza through its local subsidiary, The Beverages Company Proprietary Limited (Bevco).

Dilip Buildcon

The stock of Dilip Buildcon advanced as much as 5.56% to an intra-day high of ₹484.80 per unit, after it was selected as the successful bidder by Madhya Pradesh Urja Vikas Nigam Limited (MPUVNL) for a total capacity of 1363.55 MW AC under the Non-DCR category.

The project will be implemented through multiple Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), and the firm will secure an EPC business opportunity valued at approximately ₹4,900 crore (excluding GST) to be executed over the next 18 months, it said in a regulatory filing.

The project involves the establishment of grid-connected Solar PV-based Power Plants under the Feeder Solarization component of the PM KUSUM - C (Surya Mitra Krishi Solarization), it added.

GE Vernova

Shares of GE Vernova T&D advanced as much as 11.1% to an intra-day high of ₹3,251.80 apiece, on securing a contract from AESL Projects for the design and establishment of a 2500 MW, ± 500 kV High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) VSC Terminal Station (2x1250 MW) for the evacuation of renewable power from KPS 3 (Khavda) to South Olpad.

According to the CNBC TV-18 report, the project cost is estimated to be at ₹16,000- ₹18,000 crore.

Shriram Finance

Shares of Shriram Finance were in demand on Monday, December 22, with the stock surging over 5% to hit an all-time high of ₹946.40 apiece on the NSE.

This follows a major deal with Japan's MUFG Bank that was announced on Friday. In its press release, the company said its board has approved entering into definitive agreements with MUFG Bank Ltd (“MUFG Bank”) for an investment of ₹39,618 crore (nearly $4.4 billion) in SFL through a preferential issuance of equity shares. This investment will result in MUFG Bank acquiring a 20% stake on a fully diluted basis.
