The Indian equity benchmarks snapped their four-day losing streak on Friday on the back of strong global cues after sentiment improved tracking a softening bond yields in the United States.

The SENSEX ended 363 points higher at 76,515 and NIFTY50 index advanced 24 points to close at 23,890.

Asian markets

Most of the Asian markets were trading higher on Monday powered by buying interest in technology shares despite a surge in crude prices.

Japan's Nikkei rose 2.5%, China's Shanghai Composite advanced 0.1%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 1% and South Korea's KOSPI surged nearly 3%.

Crude oil update

Brent crude futures rose as much as 0.7% to hit an intraday high of $96.95 per barrel after reports suggested that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz slowed to its lowest level since May with an average of 10 commodity ships transiting the waterway per day over the past 10 days, news agency Reuters reported, citing shipping data by Kpler.

The 10-day moving average was 10 on Sunday, down from more than 15 on Friday and nearly 13 on Saturday. Only two vessels passed through the strait on Saturday, while six went through on Sunday, mostly using the Iranian route.

Meanwhile, United States over the weekend said that it permanently destroyed two Iran-linked oil tankers, including one near Kharg Island, and completely destroyed a third in the Gulf of Oman, BBC reported.

Iran's state media confirmed the strikes and said Tehran had attacked three US-affiliated vessels in response, as well as three oil tankers travelling through the Strait of Hormuz along an "unauthorised" route.

Wall Street update

US shares ended sharply lower on Friday as stronger than anticipated payrolls data for the month of August increased hopes of a rate hike by the US Federal Reserve going ahead.

Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.51%, S&P 500 index declined 0.38% and tech heavy Nasdaq index dropped 0.3%.

FII/DII activity

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹3,111.94 crore on Friday while domestic institutional investors bought stocks worth ₹8,930.12 crore, as per NSE data.

FIIs have so far this month sold shares worth ₹7,443 crore taking the total quantum of selling to ₹2,31,884 crore for 2026, data from NSDL showed.

Stocks to watch

Chalet Hotels: Shares of the hotel chain operator will be in focus after the company said that it aims to have around 5,500 hotel keys by FY30 as it expands beyond its traditional asset-ownership model, the hospitality player's MD and CEO Shwetank Singh said.

The expansion marks a shift in Chalet's business model, with the company now pursuing a combination of third-party operated hotels, franchise properties and hotels under its own Athiva brand.

The Athiva brand accounts for 1,200-1,300 keys of the pipeline.

Hyundai Motor India: Hyundai Motor India Ltd is betting big on rural markets, which it expects to contribute around 30 per cent of its total sales in the next three to four years, according to its Managing Director & CEO Tarun Garg.

The company, which has 68 per cent of its total sales coming from SUVs overall, is also witnessing SUV penetration of 69 per cent in the rural markets, he said in an interaction.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) is also intensifying its rural focus on network expansion with six out of every ten new outlets being opened in such markets, he added.

State Bank of India: The country's largest lender intends to hire about 12,000 personnel and add around 250 new branches to its network in the ongoing financial year, said C S Setty, Chairman of the country's biggest lender.

"In terms of recruitment, I think we would be looking at around 11,000 to 12,000 appointments across both clerical and officer cadres this year. This number may vary depending on retirements and emerging requirements, but I expect we should close the year with around 12,000 recruitments," he told PTI in an interaction.

"Last year, we have done fairly large recruitment because we took 1,500 specialist IT officers. This year, we do not need such a large number on the IT (information technology) side," he said.

RPG Lifesciences: Drug firm RPG Life Sciences is planning to deploy ₹500 crore over the next 12 months to strengthen its manufacturing and API capabilities through strategic acquisitions.

In an interview with PTI, RPG Life Sciences Managing Director Ashok Nair said the company has embarked on a significant expansion phase, backed by a committed capital infusion of ₹700 crore.

"Currently, the acquisitions we have made are to the tune of ₹200 crore. We are evaluating opportunities that can strengthen our manufacturing footprint. We would like to deploy the ₹500 crore balance in the next 12 months. We are actively pursuing good assets," Nair said.

Gland Pharma: Chinese pharmaceutical major Fosun Pharma has pared its holding in Gland Pharma by selling a 4.5% stake for ₹2,121 crore through separate block deals on BSE.

Fosun Pharma Industrial Pte Ltd, one of the promoters of Gland Pharma, offloaded 75,05,500 shares in 11 tranches, representing a 4.55% stake in the Hyderabad-based pharma company.

The transactions were executed on Friday at an average price of ₹2,826.60 apiece, taking the combined transaction value to ₹2,121.50 crore.

Tata Motors PV: Tata Motors owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) will be opening a voluntary redundancy programme that could see around 4,000 jobs cut over two years, a UK media report said on Saturday.

According to ‘The Times’, the luxury car giant is expected to formally announce the redundancy programme on Monday.

The carmaker said it needed to save about 1.7 billion pounds over the next two years as it seeks to adapt to "evolving global market conditions".

“Over the past three years, we have strengthened our house of brands and transformed our product portfolio for the next generation," JLR said in a statement.

TCS: HyperVault, a subsidiary of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), on Saturday announced that it has secured 264 acres of land in Hyderabad to develop a large-scale artificial intelligence data centre campus with a total investment outlay of up to ₹70,000 crore.

The purpose-built facility, which will have a capacity of up to 1 Gigawatt (GW), is designed to support frontier AI companies and hyperscalers with high-density, liquid-cooled compute infrastructure on a global scale, the company said in a regulatory filing.

"HyperVault, a subsidiary of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), has secured 264 acres of land to develop a large-scale AI data centre campus of up to 1GW capacity in Hyderabad.
