Latest sector update showed that the Indian Navy signed a contract with GRSE on Monday evening, November 2, for the construction of five next-generation Corvette warships to add to its fleet.

GRSE was leading the pack of gainers on Tuesday’s market as investors were powering the buying sentiment in the company, which received the mega order from the Indian defence forces. The spillover impact of the order update was seen across the board of defence stocks on November 3.

The sectoral benchmark Nifty India Defence index surged 2% to hit an intraday high of 9,008.20 points on Tuesday’s market, in comparison to 8,826.65 points at the previous equity market close.

Along with shipbuilder stocks like Mazagon Dock and Cochin Shipyard, other defence equipment maker shares like Unimech Aerospace, Solar Industries, Data Patterns India, among others also rallied on Tuesday.

These defence equipment makers and technology solutions provider shares were rising as this mega order will need sourcing of several key components, which will be procured from domestic manufacturers, in turn powering their revenue gains in the upcoming period.

Key focus will remain on the sector, with several order book updates potential as the GRSE project is estimated to take more than nine years to be completed.

GRSE secures ₹32,000 crore Indian Navy order

In an NSE filing on Monday evening, GRSE announced that the company has secured a ₹32,000 crore order from the Indian Navy for the construction of five Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs), which are essentially smaller warships.

“We wish to inform you that the company has signed a contract on Nov 2, 2026, for the construction of five (5) Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) with the Indian Navy in New Delhi at a total value of ₹32,000 crore,” according to the exchange filing.

As per the deal, GRSE will construct these ships and deliver them to the Indian Navy over the next 9 years and 4 months from the date of receipt of the first stage payment.

Mazagon Dock expansion plans

In an official statement, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders said that the company is looking towards developing the earlier proposed Greenfield Shipbuilding Industrial Clusters at Dighi, Maharashtra and Dugarajapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

The shipbuilding company is also exploring various possibilities, including potential partnerships, investment opportunities and financing arrangements for development of the proposed clusters.

“The specific project structure, investment requirements and other commercial and operational aspects are under consideration and evaluation and shall be subject to requisite approvals and finalisation, as applicable,” as per the latest NSE filing.

The sentiment of the investors remained positive amid the overall strong performance of the benchmark equity indices this week as global investors show interest in domestic stocks amid a massive selling spree in technology and chipmaking stocks in Asia and the United States.
