The Indian equity benchmarks were trading in a narrow range in noon deals on Friday, September 18, as gains in index heavyweights like HDFC Bank, Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel, State Bank of India and Reliance Industries were offset by losses in Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Titan, Maruti Suzuki and HCL Technologies.

The SENSEX traded in a range of 219 points and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday high of 23,360 and a low of 23,286.

As of 12:11 pm, the SENSEX was up 164 points at 74,478 and NIFTY50 index advanced 44 points to 23,315.

Here are shares surging amid spike in trading activity:
Bombay Burmah Trading Company: Shares of the Wadia group's tea company advanced as much as 9.5% amid spike in trading activity.

Trading volume on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) jumped by 55 times to 19.24 lakh shares compared with an average volume of 33,0880 shares.

On the BSE, a total of 19.3 lakh shares were traded compared with its two week average of 3,875 shares.

Adani Total Gas: Shares of the country's leading city gas distribution companies rose as much as 12% to an intraday high of ₹657.90, mirroring gains in other Adani Group companies after Jefferies highlighted several growth drivers across the group’s infrastructure and energy businesses.

The investment bank, in its India Forum, pointed to capacity expansion, strong transmission and port outlook, rising logistics and trading opportunities, and improving cash-flow prospects as key themes for the companies.

Meanwhile, trading volume in Adani Total Gas shares spiked by 11 times to 58.74 lakh shares compared with an average volume of 5.25 lakh shares.

Chalet Hotels: Shares of the hospitality chin operator advanced 3.66% to an intraday high of ₹874.40 after the company informed exchanges that will be attending an annual investor conference – G200 Summit on September 22.

Trading volume in the stock jumped by 4.2 times to 3.47 lakh shares compared with an average volume of 83,352 shares on the NSE.

Supreme Petrochem: Shares of the petrochemicals company advanced as much as 6.93% to an intraday high of ₹865.50 amid spike in trading activity.

Trading volume in the stock jumped by 3.2 times to 6.8 lakh shares compared with an average volume of 2.09 lakh shares.

On the BSE, 52,000 shares were traded against its two-week average of 27,000 shares.

Syrma SGS Technology: Shares of the electronics manufacturing services company rose for a third straight session. The stock rose as much as 9.22% to a fresh 52-week high of ₹1,764.95, mirroring gains in other EMS shares.

Trading volume in the stock jumped by 2.7 times to 71.29 lakh shares compared with an average volume of 26.84 lakh shares.
