The revised rates come into force alongside the rollout of the new law, which replaces the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and provides 125 days of guaranteed wage employment to every eligible rural household.

According to the Ministry of Rural Development, the national average notified wage has increased from ₹298.8 per day under MGNREGA to ₹327.4 per day under the new programme, an average increase of ₹28.6 per day or over 10%.

The government, for the first time, has introduced an interim base wage of ₹300 per day, ensuring that no notified wage under the programme falls below this level.

Earlier, the lowest wage under MGNREGA was ₹241 per day.

The ministry said 21 states, Union Territories and administrative units have been brought up to the new ₹300 benchmark.

The biggest percentage increases have been given to states where wage rates were historically lower.

Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland have received the highest increase of nearly 24.5%, while Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Odisha are among the states that have received substantial hikes.

According to the gazette notification, the daily wage has been fixed at ₹300 for states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Assam, Gujarat, Odisha, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh.

Andhra Pradesh has been assigned a wage rate of ₹312 per day, Maharashtra ₹317, Telangana ₹308 and Tamil Nadu ₹345.

Haryana will now have the country's highest general wage rate at ₹409 per day, followed by Goa at ₹406, Kerala at ₹401, Karnataka at ₹382 and Punjab at ₹360.

Special wage rates have also been notified for certain regions, including ₹450 per day for three gram panchayats in Sikkim and ₹375 per day for scheduled areas of Himachal Pradesh.

“The largest increase has been provided to States where wages were historically lower, so that those who need the greatest support benefit the most,” Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said. “This historic wage revision will strengthen rural livelihoods, increase purchasing power and accelerate inclusive development across rural India.”

The ministry said the revised wages have been determined using a transparent methodology combining annual indexation with the newly introduced interim base wage to ensure fair wages while reducing historical disparities across states.
