Donald Trump’s administration is reportedly mulling travel bans on citizens of as many as 43 countries, an official familiar with the matter told the New York Times.

The scope of the restrictions would be broader than those imposed during Donald Trump’s first term, the report added.

A draft list of the “banned” countries was prepared weeks ago by the State Department, officials told the New York Times under the condition of anonymity.

The list, as per the report is divided into three parts, including red, orange and yellow, each colour specifying the degree of severity of the ban.

The “red” list includes 11 countries facing full visa suspension, the “orange” list comprises 10 countries that face partial visa suspension and the “yellow” list includes 22 countries that have 60 days to address US concerns.

An official told Reuters that changes could be made to the list as it hadn’t been reviewed by President Donald Trump’s administration, including the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Here is the list:

Red (full visa suspension)
  • Afghanistan
  • Bhutan
  • Cuba
  • Iran
  • Libya
  • North Korea
  • Somalia
  • Sudan
  • Syria
  • Venezuela
  • Yemen
Orange (Visa sharply restricted)
  • Belarus
  • Eritrea
  • Haiti
  • Laos
  • Myanmar
  • Pakistan
  • Russia
  • Sierra Leone
  • South Sudan
  • Turkmenistan
Yellow (60 days to address concerns)
  • Angola
  • Antigua and Barbuda
  • Benin
  • Burkina Faso
  • Cambodia
  • Cameroon
  • Cape Verde
  • Chad
  • Republic of Congo
  • Democratic Republic of Congo
  • Dominica
  • Equatorial Guinea
  • Gambia
  • Liberia
  • Malawi
  • Mali
  • Mauritania
  • St. Kitts and Nevis
  • St. Lucia
  • São Tomé and Príncipe
  • Vanuatu
  • Zimbabwe

Citizens of countries on the red list will be flatly barred from entering the United States. Further, citizens of the 10 countries on the orange list will have restricted visa access, as in they won’t be completely barred but will require in-person interviews. While affluent business owners will likely not be affected, it will impact tourists, students and other visas.

The countries on the yellow list will be given 60 days to address “deficiencies”, with the threat of being moved to either of the two categories if they do not comply.

Previously, during his first term as the President, Donald Trump banned citizens of seven Islamic countries from entering the US. He had also imposed a reverse travel ban on North Korea, which prohibited US citizens from traveling to the country. At the time, it was upheld by the Supreme Court.

However, in 2021, former US President Joe Biden revoked Trump’s travel ban except for the reverse travel ban on North Korea.
