The performance of the 28 RRBs was reviewed at a meeting chaired by the Secretary, Department of Financial Services (DFS), in New Delhi.

RRBs operate through 22,273 branches across 26 states and three Union Territories, covering around 700 districts.

The ministry said both gross and net non-performing assets of RRBs declined to all-time lows of 5.3% and 2.1%, respectively, in FY26.

The credit-deposit ratio of RRBs also reached a record 75.2% during the fiscal.

RRBs continued to meet all prescribed targets and sub-targets under priority sector lending, serving marginalised and underserved sections of society, it said.

As part of efforts to deepen financial inclusion, RRBs opened more than 54.98 lakh new accounts under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) during FY26.

The DFS Secretary called on RRBs to accelerate the adoption of modern banking technology and expand digital delivery of financial services to improve operational efficiency and customer experience.

The move is aimed at ensuring wider access to banking services in rural and far-flung areas and extending the benefits of digital banking to all sections of society, including the youth, the ministry said.

The senior government official also stressed the need to expand access to banking services in rural and far-flung areas and ensure that the benefits of digital banking reach every section of society, including the youth of the country.

Sponsor banks were asked to provide greater support to RRBs, particularly in strengthening their information technology infrastructure.

The chairpersons of RRBs were also encouraged to take personal initiatives to boost credit flow to sectors relevant to their respective areas of operation and explore new and innovative avenues of lending.

The meeting was attended by the chairman of NABARD, chairpersons of all 28 RRBs, officials from DFS, sponsor banks, the Reserve Bank of India and the Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI).
