Bank holiday today: Banks shut for Janmashtami in these states; Is your state on the list?

Banks will remain closed in several states on Friday, September 4, on account of Janmashtami, or Krishna Jayanthi, according to the Reserve Bank of India's holiday calendar.

Physical bank branches will remain shut in Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal and Jammu and Kashmir.

However, bank branches in Tripura, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Assam, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Goa and New Delhi will function as usual on Friday.

Bank holidays in September 2026

The RBI's holiday calendar lists 16 bank holidays in September, including weekends and state-specific holidays. The holidays, however, vary from state to state and branches are not closed on all the dates listed across the country.

Banks in Jaipur will remain closed on September 11 on account of elections in the jurisdiction of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation, while branches in Assam will observe a holiday on September 12 for the Tirubhav Tithi of Srimanta Sankardeva.

September 14 will be a bank holiday in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Telangana on account of Ganesh Chaturthi, Varasiddhi Vinayaka Vrata, Vinayakar Chathurthi or Hartalika.

On September 15, banks will remain closed in Gujarat for Samvatsari (Chaturthi Paksha) and in Odisha for Nuakhai. Goa will also observe a holiday for the second day of Ganesh Chaturthi.

Banks in Assam will remain closed on September 21 for the Janmotsav of Srimanta Sankardeva, while branches in Kerala will observe a holiday for Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi.

Jharkhand will observe a bank holiday on September 22 for Karma Puja, while banks in Jammu and Kashmir will remain closed on September 23 on account of the birthday of Maharaja Hari Singh Ji.

September 25 will be a bank holiday in Sikkim for Indrajatra.

Apart from these state-specific holidays, banks will also remain closed on Sundays and the second and fourth Saturdays of the month.

Customers can continue to access digital banking services such as internet banking, mobile banking, ATMs and UPI even when physical branches are closed.

Nationwide bank strikes in September

Banking services may also face disruptions this month due to nationwide strikes called by bank unions.

The United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) has called for an all-India strike on September 11, followed by a three-day strike from September 28 to 30. The unions are seeking implementation of five-day banking and withdrawal of the government's revised performance-linked incentive scheme for senior bank officers.
