If you are among the taxpayers who usually wait until the last few days to file your income tax return (ITR), there is some relief. With just ten days left for the first deadline for filing ITR-1 and ITR-2, the income tax department has announced that its e-filing and Centralised Processing Centre (CPC) helplines will operate 24x7 from 8 am on July 25 until 11:59 pm on July 31.

The extended support is aimed at helping taxpayers who may face login issues, portal glitches, or other difficulties while filing their returns at the last minute.

According to a notice on the income tax department's website, "From 25th July 2026, 08:00 Hrs onwards, our support lines will operate 24x7 until 23:59 Hrs on 31st July 2026."

Who will benefit?

The move is expected to be particularly useful for salaried taxpayers and other individuals who tend to file their returns at the last minute. As the first due date, July 31, is just days away, the e-filing portal typically witnesses a surge in traffic, leading to higher demand for customer support.

However, this year the filing is not the same as it used to be because not every taxpayer has a July 31 deadline this year.

ITR filing calendar has changed

July 31, 2026: Most individuals, including salaried taxpayers and others who are not required to get their accounts audited.
August 31, 2026: Businesses and professionals filing ITR-3 or ITR-4 whose accounts are not subject to a tax audit.
Even though some taxpayers now have more time to file their returns, the department's round-the-clock helpline will provide timely assistance to anyone who wants to complete the process early or needs help before the July-end rush.

What can the helpline help you with?

Taxpayers can contact the e-filing and CPC support team for assistance with:

  • July 20-24: 8:00 am to 10:00 pm (Monday to Friday)
