SUMMARY

Online ITR verification is a very important step in completing the ITR filing process. It must be done within 30 days from the date of filing the ITR, or else the income tax department will deem your return invalid.

How to e-verify your income tax return

E-verification is generally preferred over physical verification due to faster processing and to avoid the risk of document loss.

Online ITR verification is a very important step in completing the ITR filing process. It must be done within 30 days from the date of filing the ITR, or else the income tax department will deem your return invalid.

What is ITR verification?

When you file your return, the income tax department receives your ITR but does not start processing it. The processing starts only after the return has been verified. This process is called the verification of ITR.

The time limit for ITR verification online is 30 days from submitting the ITR as per the new rule. Previously, this time limit was 120 days. This new rule is applicable for returns on or after 1st August 2022.

E-verification is the most convenient and instant method to verify your ITR.

Five ways in which returns can be e-verified

You can e-Verify your returns online using:
1. OTP on mobile number registered with Aadhaar

OTP is sent to the mobile number linked with Aadhaar.

2. EVC generated through your pre-validated bank account

Generating an Electronic Verification Code (EVC) through a pre-validated bank account.

3. EVC generated through your pre-validated demat account

EVC can be generated using a pre-validated Demat account as well.

4. Net Banking

Authorised banks provide EVC through their net banking portals as well.

5. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC)

DSC can be used to e-verify ITR by taxpayers. You will not be able to choose DSC as a preferred option to e-Verify in case you have selected the e-Verify Later option while submitting Income Tax Returns.

How will I know that my e-verification is complete?

In case you are e-verifying your return:

  • A success message will be displayed along with a Transaction ID

  • An email will be sent to your email ID registered with the e-filing portal

Benefits of e-verification

  • You do not need to send a physical copy of your ITR-V to CPC, Bangalore.

  • Verification of your ITR happens instantly, which saves you from the delay in transit of ITR-V.

Is it mandatory to e-Verify your return?

No. e-verification is not the only method. Taxpayers can either:

  • E-verify their return online, or

  • Send a signed physical copy of the ITR-V to CPC, Bengaluru.

Taxpayers who opt for physical verification must print the ITR-V acknowledgement form, sign it, and post it to the Centralised Processing Centre (CPC), Bangalore, within 30 days of filing the ITR.

E-verification is generally preferred over physical verification due to faster processing and to avoid the risk of document loss.
