SUMMARY

One should ideally wait till the second week of June to file ITR. This will allow TDS credits to reflect correctly in Form 26AS. The wait will also ensure that all income and tax details are reflected properly in AIS.

The Income Tax Return (ITR) filing online for AY 2025-26 (FY 2024-25) has started. If your accounts do not need an audit, you can now go to the Income Tax Department's website and file your returns using ITR-1 and ITR-4 utilities.

Taxpayers using ITR-1 and ITR-4 can also file their returns using the Excel utilities, which was enabled last week. (You can also check this step-by-step guide to file ITR on your own). However, you should wait before rushing to file ITR this year. This article explains some reasons.

Although the ITR forms and the Excel and online utilities for ITR-1 and ITR-4 are available, rushing to file returns as of now can cause some issues. The following are some reasons:

First, TDS certificates are yet to be updated. This is because the TDS return due date was May 31, 2025, and it may take 5-7 days for the Form 26AS to reflect updated entries. For salaried employees, Form 16 will be issued by employers in mid-June.

Second, the Annual Information Statement (AIS) and Taxpayer Information Summary (TIS) are also not updated yet. They are usually updated in the first week of June.

Third, other ITR utilities for ITR-2, ITR-3, ITR-5, ITR-6, and ITR are yet to be made live.

How long should you wait?

You should ideally wait till the 2nd week of June to file ITR. This will allow TDS credits to reflect correctly in Form 26AS. The wait will also ensure that all income and tax details are reflected properly in AIS. Updated Form 26AS, AIS, Form 16, etc., will help you cross-verify details while filing ITR.

Moreover, the ITR due date has been extended this year to September 15 for non-audit filers. So if you find any error in these forms, you will have some time to get them rectified before filing the return.
