More than five lakh beneficiaries of Delhi's old-age and disability pension schemes will soon undergo a door-to-door biometric verification exercise as the government seeks to update records and ensure welfare benefits reach only eligible recipients, according to a PTI report.

The verification drive is expected to begin within a month and is likely to be completed over the next five months, officials told PTI.

Why is the verification being conducted?

According to officials cited by PTI, the exercise aims to improve the accuracy of beneficiary records and identify cases where pension benefits may still be getting disbursed despite a beneficiary having died, migrated from Delhi, or otherwise become ineligible under the scheme's norms.

The government believes the exercise will help reduce leakages in welfare schemes and ensure public funds are directed to eligible beneficiaries.

What will happen during the door-to-door verification?

As part of the exercise, survey personnel will visit beneficiaries at their residences and carry out biometric authentication using fingerprint and iris scanners.

Teams will also capture live photographs of beneficiaries and update their records through electronic documentation.

The verification will be conducted at beneficiaries' homes, eliminating the need for most pensioners to visit government offices for the process.

Who will conduct the exercise?

To facilitate the drive, the department has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Common Service Centre (CSC), which operates around 6,000 centres across Delhi.

The CSC network will assist the department in carrying out the verification process across the city.

How many pensioners will be covered?

According to official data cited by PTI, more than 4.35 lakh senior citizens are currently enrolled under Delhi's old age pension scheme.

The exercise will also cover beneficiaries receiving pensions under schemes meant for persons with disabilities, taking the total number of beneficiaries to more than five lakh.

What pension benefits do senior citizens receive?

Under the Old Age Pension Scheme, beneficiaries aged 60 to 69 years receive a monthly pension of ₹2,000, while those aged 70 years and above are entitled to ₹2,500 per month.
Officials told PTI that the verification exercise is intended to strengthen transparency and accountability in the delivery of social welfare benefits.

Dedicated help desk to support verification

Given the scale of the exercise, the department has set up a dedicated help desk to assist survey teams and address operational issues that may arise during the verification process.

The proposal for the verification drive had earlier received Cabinet approval, and authorities are now finalising implementation details ahead of its rollout.
