Minister of State for Communications Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar announced the change on Friday.

“With immediate effect, an operative Savings Bank Account with POSB or any Scheduled Bank is now an additional eligibility criterion for Rural Postal Life Insurance (RPLI),” the minister said in a post on X.

The move will help people who migrate from rural to urban areas continue their RPLI policies by allowing them to pay premiums through a savings account with any scheduled bank.

What is Rural Postal Life Insurance?

Rural Postal Life Insurance, or RPLI, is a life insurance scheme offered by India Post for people in rural areas.

India Post says RPLI was introduced on March 24, 1995, after the government accepted the recommendations of the Malhotra Committee to extend Postal Life Insurance coverage to rural areas.

The prime objective of the scheme is to provide insurance cover to the rural public in general, especially weaker sections and women workers, and to spread insurance awareness among the rural population.

What has changed in RPLI eligibility?

The key change is the addition of an operative savings account with POSB or any scheduled bank as an eligibility criterion for RPLI.

This means customers can use a savings account with a scheduled bank for the purpose of establishing eligibility under the revised framework.

The minister said the move removes the traditional rural-residence barrier and brings affordable, government-backed life insurance closer to more families.

What documents are accepted for RPLI eligibility?

The process of establishing eligibility has also been simplified, according to the minister.

Applicants can use:
  • CBS status

  • Email statements

  • Mobile banking screenshots

  • ATM statements

  • Updated passbooks

“The process is simpler and more citizen-friendly. Eligibility can be established through CBS status, email statements, mobile banking screenshots, ATM statements or updated passbooks. Where acceptable digital proof is available, no physical bank certificate is required,” he said.

This means that where acceptable digital proof is available, applicants do not need to submit a physical bank certificate.

Who can opt for RPLI?

The RPLI scheme is available in the 18-43 years age bracket, according to the information provided in the announcement.

The maximum investment under RPLI is ₹10 lakh.

These details are separate from the latest change allowing an operative savings account with POSB or any scheduled bank to serve as an additional eligibility criterion.

What does the new RPLI rule mean for people moving to cities?

The change is particularly relevant for people who migrate from rural to urban areas.

Under the revised arrangement, they can continue their RPLI policy while paying the premium through a savings account with any scheduled bank.

This is intended to make it easier for such policyholders to maintain continuity of their insurance coverage after moving.
