Gold prices remain elevated despite some moderation during the second quarter of 2026. According to the World Gold Council's Gold Demand Trends Q2 2026 report, global gold demand remained steady at 1,269 tonnes, while the value of first-half demand reached a record US$380 billion. In India, demand softened to 131 tonnes, down 6% year-on-year, as high prices affected affordability.
However, Indian consumers still spent a record ₹1.979 lakh crore on gold during the quarter, highlighting the continued importance of gold as jewellery, an investment and a store of wealth. The report also notes strong central-bank buying, with global central banks purchasing 289 tonnes in Q2, suggesting that underlying demand for gold remains strong even at elevated prices.
On 7 September 2026, the latest verified retail gold and silver rates available from NSE/BSE-listed jewellers show that Tanishq (Titan) is quoting ₹14,235 per gram for 22-karat gold, while Thangamayil Jewellery is quoting ₹14,190 per gram for 22-karat gold, ₹15,480 per gram for 24-karat gold and ₹255 per gram for silver. Kalyan Jewellers publishes rates that can vary by city.
Meanwhile, on Friday, gold prices in New Delhi rose by ₹1,400 to ₹1,60,900 per 10 grams, while silver remained flat at ₹2,40,500 per kg. In futures trade, however, MCX gold for October delivery declined ₹431 to ₹1,55,344 per 10 grams as investors turned cautious ahead of key US economic data, particularly the nonfarm payrolls report.
Market participants are now watching US inflation data and signals on the Federal Reserve's interest-rate outlook, which could determine the next major move in precious metals.
