The SGB 2021-22 Series VI was issued on September 7, 2021. As per the Government of India notification F.No. 4(5)-B(W&M)/2021 dated May 12, 2021, premature redemption of a Gold Bond may be permitted after the fifth year from the date of issue, on the date on which interest is payable.

In its notification, the RBI said, “premature redemption of Gold Bond may be permitted after fifth year from the date of issue of such Gold Bond on the date on which interest is payable.”

Accordingly, September 7, 2026, is the due date for premature redemption of SGB 2021-22 Series VI.

How is the premature redemption price of an SGB calculated?

The premature redemption price of an SGB is linked to the prevailing price of gold rather than the original issue price of the bond. The RBI said the redemption price “shall be based on simple average of closing price of gold of 999 purity of previous three business days from the date of redemption”, as published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association Ltd (IBJA).

For the September 7, 2026 redemption, the applicable price has been fixed at ₹15,334 per SGB unit. The price is based on the simple average of the closing prices of 999-purity gold for the three business days preceding the redemption date, September 2, September 3 and September 4, 2026.

SGB premature redemption calendar for October 2026-March 2027

Meanwhile, the premature redemption calendar for SGBs covering October 2026 to March 2027 has also been released. The calendar sets out the applicable exit dates for different SGB tranches that become eligible for premature redemption after completing five years from their respective issue dates. Investors holding SGBs from different issue series can therefore check the calendar to identify the applicable premature redemption date for their holdings.

Under the SGB scheme, investors can opt for premature redemption once five years have passed from the date of issue. The bonds otherwise have an eight-year maturity period. Investors therefore need to keep track of the applicable redemption date for their particular tranche.

The premature redemption facility does not mean that investors can exit their SGB holdings at any time. The redemption takes place on the applicable date for the respective tranche after the five-year period has been completed.

For investors holding SGB 2021-22 Series VI, the key date to remember is September 7, 2026, when premature redemption is due at ₹15,334 per unit.
