T. Nagar and other markets in the city has been taking advance bookings all week. Most showrooms will hold a booking only until Friday afternoon, which leaves buyers little room to wait for a better price.

Numbers show that the ₹338 a gram that October 31 wiped off the board has now been recovered more than twice over. Moreover, there has been four sessions of gains since November 1, adding approx. ₹714 a gram. The yellow metal is also back above the ₹14,395 it carried on October 29.

The city's own market has a quirk worth knowing. Because temple jewellery and heavy bridal sets are almost always made in 22 karat, the demand that shows up on Dhanteras is concentrated mostly in one grade. And jewellers price their labour on weight rather than value for those pieces. An 18 karat studded piece costs roughly a quarter less per gram, but its making charge per gram is usually higher.

However, your final bill may not match the carat-based price because of GST and making charges, and that is normal. For instance, a 10-gram 22 karat ornament at 10% making charges carries GST of ₹4,417 and lands at about ₹1,51,652.

Please note that a store’s own rate for the day may sit a little above or below the Chennai figure quoted here. This is because stock, zone and local supply all feed into the final price. Therefore, it is advisable to compare two or three shops to land a better deal.

The are two more items that buyers should check: Firs, ask whether the making charge is a percentage or a flat rupee figure per gram, since the second is easier to compare and harder to inflate. Second, confirm the BIS hallmark and HUID on the piece itself rather than on the box or the tag.
