From gold coins and bars to jewellery, buyers have several options to choose from. However, festive shopping can also mean crowded jewellery stores, attractive offers and plenty of pricing details to consider. Before making a purchase, it is worth taking a little time to understand the quality of the gold and the charges involved.

Whether you are buying a small gold coin or planning to invest in jewellery, a few basic checks can help you make a more informed decision.

If you are planning to buy gold this year, here are three important things to keep in mind before making the purchase

1. Check gold purity and hallmark

One of the first things to check before buying gold jewellery is its purity. Gold is commonly sold in 24K, 22K and 18K varieties. While 24K gold is considered nearly pure, jewellery is often made using 22K or 18K gold because these alloys offer greater durability.

Do not rely only on what the seller tells you. Look for the BIS hallmark, which indicates that the jewellery has undergone purity testing. Also check the purity mark and the six-digit HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) number.

2. Compare the gold rate before buying

Gold prices fluctuate regularly, so the rate you see today may not be the same as the rate quoted by a jeweller tomorrow. Before making a purchase, check the prevailing 22K or 24K gold rate in your city.

It is also a good idea to compare prices across a few reputed jewellers. Different stores may quote different rates or have different pricing practices, even for jewellery of the same purity.

3. Understand making charges, wastage and GST

The gold rate is not the only amount you will pay when purchasing jewellery. The final bill can include making charges, wastage charges, where applicable, and GST.

Making charges cover the cost of designing and crafting the jewellery. These may be calculated as a percentage of the gold value or as a fixed amount per gram. Wastage charges, if levied, are meant to account for material loss during the manufacturing process.

The applicable GST rate on gold jewellery is 3% of the total transaction value.

When is Dhanteras 2026?

Dhanteras will be celebrated on Friday, November 6, 2026. Also known as Dhantrayodashi, it falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik and marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali celebrations.

Buying gold, silver, utensils and other valuables on Dhanteras is considered auspicious. Many families plan their jewellery purchases around this occasion, while jewellers also roll out festive collections and special offers.
