SUMMARY
Indian equity benchmark indices extended their winning streak for the fifth session in a row, with NIFTY50 and SENSEX ending the day at fresh record highs. However, market breadth remained weak amid underperformance by the broader market indices.

NIFTY50 and SENSEX close at record highs, NIFTY50 ends above 25,000 for first time
Indian bourses began the month of August on an optimistic note, with the NIFTY50 above the psychological level of 25,000 and the SENSEX above the 82,000 mark. However, the indices retreated from their day's higher levels as volatility set in due to the NIFTY weekly expiry. Ultimately, the NIFTY50 settled at 25,010.90, up by 59.75 points, while the SENSEX ended higher by 126.20 points at 81,867.55. Nifty Bank also ended with modest gains but closed significantly lower from its intraday high of 51,877.15.
Coming to the NIFTY50 index pullers and draggers, HDFC Bank (+54.35 pts), Reliance (+19.17 pts), Power Grid (+13.71 pts), Coal India (+9.34 pts), and NTPC (+8.06 pts) were the pullers of the day. Draggers included M&M (-17.73 pts), Infosys (-16.83 pts), L&T (-11.9 pts), ICICI Bank (-10.27 pts) and SBI (-9.12 pts).
Today, the broader market closed on a negative note. The Nifty Midcap 100 declined by 0.85%, and the Nifty Smallcap 100 index slipped by 0.98%. Market breadth was weak on Thursday as the declining stocks outnumbered the advancing stocks marginally.
Most of the sectoral indices faced selling pressure today. The top three gainers were NIFTY Oil & Gas (+0.35%), NIFTY Healthcare (+0.27%), and NIFTY FMCG (+0.15%). The top three losers were NIFTY Media (-1.89%), NIFTY Realty (-1.70%), and NIFTY PSU Bank (-0.99%).
The majority of Asian markets concluded Thursday's trading session in red. The Hang Seng declined by -0.23%, the Shanghai index closed with a loss of -0.22%, the Nikkei 225 index plummeted by -2.62%, while only the Kospi index closed in green, up by +0.25%.
