Vedanta shares climb 3% as Orissa High Court issues stay order on ₹71 crore environmental compensation demand

Shares of Vedanta Ltd surged 2.96% to an intra-day high of ₹411.90 apiece on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Monday, April 21. This follows the Orissa High Court issuing a stay order on a ₹71.17 crore (₹71,16,53,320) demand for environmental compensation from the State Pollution Control Board.

Vedanta stock was trading in the green at ₹410.80, up 2.69% at around 11:54 am, on the NSE.

On April 17, 2025, the High Court of Orissa issued a stay order, i.e., temporarily stopping or postponing any judicial proceeding, for two letters dated December 17, 2024, and April 10, 2025, from the State Pollution Control Board, Orissa.

Vedanta said in a regulatory filing dated April 19 that the two letters were for the alleged incorrect disposal of fly ash.

“The company believes that it has a strong case on merits and is hopeful of a favorable outcome,” Vedanta said.

Furthermore, on April 17, Vedanta’s S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) rating was revised from 67 to 75, the company said in a separate filing dated April 18.

Vedanta share performance

Shares of Vedanta gained 5.18% over the past week but lost 11.59% since the beginning of April. The stock slumped 7.77% on a year-to-date basis.

The scrip hit its 52-week low of ₹363 on April 7, 2025, and a high of ₹526.95 on December 16, 2025.

Vedanta has a total market capitalisation of ₹1.61 lakh crore as of April 21, 2025, on the NSE.

Vedanta December results

Vedanta reported a 76.2% year-on-year (YoY) rise in its profit after tax to ₹3,547 crore in the third quarter of the 2024-25 financial year (Q3FY25), compared to ₹2,013 crore in the year-ago period.

The company’s revenue from operations stood at ₹38,526 crore in the December quarter of FY25, jumping 10.18% YoY from ₹34,968 crore in the third quarter of the 2023-24 fiscal year (Q3FY24).
