The Indian equity benchmarks rose for second straight session on Monday, May 26 led by gains in index heavyweights like ICICI Bank, ITC, Reliance Industries, Mahindra & Mahindra and Infosys. The SENSEX rose as much as 771 points and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday high of 25,079. The SENSEX ended 455 points or 0.56% higher at 82,176 and NIFTY50 index advanced 148 points to close at 25,001.

NIFTY50 top gainers and losers

Bajaj Auto was top gainer in the NIFTY50 basket of shares, the stock rose 2.39% to close at ₹8,960 mirroring gains in other auto shares after Bloomberg report suggested that US President Donald Trump would extend the deadline for the European Union to face 50% tariffs until July 9 after a phone call with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

JSW Steel advanced 2.13% after it announced net profit of ₹1,503 crore in January-March quarter, marking an increase of 16% from ₹1,209 crore in the same period last year.

JSW Steel's total revenue from operations declined 3% to ₹44,819 crore as against ₹46,269 crore in the year-ago period.

Operationally the company recorded stable performance in fourth quarter of financial year 2024-25 as its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) also known as operating profit rose 4% to ₹6,378 crore as against ₹6,124 crore in the corresponding period last year.

Mahindra & Mahindra (2.07%), Trent (1.72%) and Hindalco (1.68%) were also among the gainers.

On the flipside, Eternal was top loser in the NIFTY50 index, the stock fell 4.59% to close at ₹226.65 following reports that the stock could see significant passive outflows. The development came after global index provider FTSE Russell announced a reduction in Eternal’s weight across multiple indices due to regulatory changes in the company’s foreign ownership limits.

According to news reports that quoted a research study, FTSE’s rebalancing could trigger passive outflows worth $380 million (approx. ₹3,235 crore). Further outflows may be on the horizon, with MSCI also expected to cut Eternal’s weight in its indices during its upcoming May review, potentially adding another $460 million (₹3,917 crore) in outflows.

UltraTech Cement (-0.60%), Kotak Mahindra Bank (-0.51%), Power Grid (-0.47%) and NTPC (-0.38%) were also among the losers.

NIFTY Midcap 100 gainers and losers

NIFTY Midcap 100 index rose 0.67% or 380 points to close at 57,067. As many as 70 shares in the index ended higher. HUDCO was top gainer in the NIFTY Midcap 100 index, the stock rose 4.75% to close at ₹238.60. Suzlon (4%), Astral (3.57%), Solar Industries (3.51%) and RVNL (3.42%) were also among the gainers.

On the other hand, Glenmark (-2.18%), Premier Energies (-2%), Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (-1.58%), Nykaa (-1.47%) and Cochin Shipyard (-1.46%) were also among the losers.

NIFTY Smallcap 100 gainers and losers

NIFTY Smallcap 100 index rose 0.37% or 64 points to close at 17,708. As many as 55 shares in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index ended higher while 45 closed lower.

BEML was top gainer in the NIFTY Smallcap 100 index, the stock rose 15.51% to close at 4,295 after its March quarter earnings surpassed street estimates. BEML's net profit in January-March quarter rose 13% to ₹288 crore as against ₹257 crore in the year-ago period.

KEC International (6.47%), IFCI (5.77%), Action Construction Equipment (5.12%) and Data Patterns (3.92%) were also among the gainers.

On the contrary, Shyam Metaliks (-3.62%), HBL Engineering (-3.48%), Aegis Logistics (-2.88%), Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra) (-2.83%) and Angel One (-2.80%) were among the laggards.
