The rupee hit a fresh all-time low of 92.45 against the US dollar as FII outflows continue, further weakening the sentiment.
On Thursday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold stocks worth ₹7,049.87 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) purchased equities worth ₹7,449.77 crore on a net basis, according to exchange data.
The SENSEX plunged by as many as 1,579.82 points to an intraday low of 74,454.60. Meanwhile, the NIFTY50 touched the day’s low of 23,112.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) weighed down the NIFTY50 index, closing at ₹3,445 apiece, marking a 7.38% decline.
It was followed by selling in the shares of Hindalco Industries (-6.07%), Tata Steel (-5.41%), JSW Steel (-4.49%) and Grasim Industries (-3.86%), which were among the other top losers of the day.
On the other hand, just three of the 50 constituents in the index closed in the green. The top gainers included Tata Consumer Products (2.29%), Hindustan Unilever (1.17%) and Bharti Airtel (0.09%).
NSE’s NIFTY midcap gauge, the Midcap 100, ended 2.65% or 1,492.65 points lower at 54,761.10 on March 13, weighed down by the sell-off in the shares of Bharat Forge (-6.16%).
The other top laggards were Blue Star (-6.16%), Adani Total Gas (-5.78%), National Aluminium Company (-5.55%) and Astral (-5.07%).
On the flipside, Muthoot Finance (2.62%), NTPC Green Energy (1.37%), Prestige Estates Projects (0.55%), NHPC (0.43%) and Swiggy (0.39%) were among the top winners. Only seven out of 100 shares in the midcap index advanced.
The NIFTY Smallcap 100 closed at 15,895.25, down by 410 points or 2.51%.
The top losers included Amber Enterprises India (-7.21%), Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (-6.60%), PCBL Chemical (-6.29%), Hindustan Copper (-5.94%) and Aarti Industries (-5.87%).
On the contrary, IFCI (5.86%), Cholamandalam Financial Holdings (4.26%), Atul (2.31%), Angel One (1.58%) and Firstsource Solutions (1.32%) were among the top gainers.
