The markets snapped their two-day winning streak, as investor sentiment remained cautious ahead of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's press conference due later in the day to explain new US sanctions against Iran.
The SENSEX tumbled as much as 0.44% to hit an intraday low of 77,201.66, while the NIFTY50 tanked as much as 0.44% to touch the session’s low of 24,144.30.

The 50-share NIFTY index was dragged down by selling in the shares of SBI Life Insurance Company, which closed 1.73% lower.
It was followed by Adani Ports & SEZ (-1.64%), Bajaj Finance (-1.64%), Bajaj Finserv (-1.52%) and Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) (-1.21%), which were among the top losers of the day.
On the other hand, the top gainers included JSW Steel (2.57%), Hindalco Industries (2.37%), Tata Steel (1.80%), HCL Technologies (1.50%) and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories (1.30%).
NSE’s midcap gauge, the NIFTY Midcap 100, advanced by 81.50 points, or 0.13%, to end at 63,817.25 on Monday.
The top winners included Vishal Mega Mart, which closed 9.74% higher, after the company last week announced the re-appointment of Gunender Kapur for a tenure of five years with effect from September 01, 2026, and redesignated him as Founder, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer of the company.
It was followed by Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) (-3.57%), Glenmark Pharmaceuticals (3.14%), Multi Commodity Exchange (2.61%) and LG Electronics India (2.57%).
On the flip side, Coromandel International (-3.56%), Premier Energies (-2.18%), Dixon Technologies (-1.89%), Oracle Financial Services Software (-1.76%) and Rail Vikas Nigam (-1.60%) were among the top laggards.
The NIFTY Smallcap 100 closed at 19,926.75, marking a 51-point or 0.26% fall on August 24.
In response to the report, BLS International “categorically rejected” allegations of involvement in visa irregularities, according to a regulatory filing.
The other top losers were Aegis Logistics (-5.46%), Five-Star Business Finance (-4.02%), Tenneco Clean Air India (-3.90%), and Credit Access Grameen (-3.75%).
On the contrary, IDBI Bank (7.61%), Urban Company (6.12%), Capri Global Capital Ltd (5.74%), Redington (4.02%) and Welspun Corp (3.89%) were among the top gainers.
Shares of Urban Company soared on Monday, as investors focused on the global index provider FTSE’s latest index addition move during the semi-annual review ahead of September 2026.
FTSE added Urban Company shares to three of its benchmark indices as part of the latest index review ahead of the implementation in September 2026. As per the official filing, the stock will be included and trade under the specific index from Monday, September 21, 2026.
