The project was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2019 to provide safe and adequate drinking water through tap connections to all households in rural India.
"The Cabinet approved the Ministry of Jal Shakti's proposal to restructure and reorient the implementation of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) from infrastructure creation to service delivery, supported by drinking water governance and an institutional ecosystem for a sustainable rural piped potable water supply," the minister said at a press conference.
For restructuring JJM, focusing on structural reforms, the Cabinet has approved an enhancement of the total outlay to ₹8.69 lakh crore, with a total central assistance of ₹3.59 lakh crore as against ₹2.08 lakh crore approved in 2019-20.
A uniform national digital framework called "Sujalam Bharat" shall be instituted, under which every village shall be assigned a unique Sujal Gaon or Service Area ID, digitally mapping the complete drinking water supply system from source to tap.
Shakti Pumps shares rallied over 16% to hit a high of ₹571.30 apiece on the NSE, while VA Tech Wabag stock rallied over 9% to ₹1,309 on the NSE.
KSB Limited was trading over 2% higher at ₹777 on the NSE.
Among pipe names, Astral was trading over 2% higher, while Supreme Industries was trading 1.67% higher at ₹4,000 on the NSE. Finolex Industries was also trading over 1% higher.
Among EPC names, NCC Ltd was trading over 4.5% higher at ₹151.65 on the NSE, Larsen and Toubro Ltd was up 0.3% at ₹3,887.50.
The extension of the Jal Jeevan Mission with an enhanced outlay of ₹8.7 lakh crore is broadly positive for EPC, pipe, and pump companies in India, as the programme involves large-scale construction of rural drinking water infrastructure such as pipelines, pumping stations, reservoirs, and treatment plants.
The scheme requires large-scale project execution, including laying water pipelines, building treatment plants, and installing pumping infrastructure. This creates multi-year order opportunities for EPC contractors.

The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) was launched in 2019 by the Ministry of Jal Shakti and aims to provide functional household tap connections (FHTC) to every rural household, delivering at least 55 litres of potable water per capita per day by 2024 (now extended to 2028).
The mission focuses on sustainability, community ownership, and greywater management, having covered over 81% of rural households as of early 2026.
