SENSEX falls 450 pts in morning trade, NIFTY50 trades below 22,800; M&M shares fall 6%

Stock market today: At 10:51 AM, the S&P BSE SENSEX was trading at 75,473.42, down 262.54 points, or 0.35%, while the NSE's NIFTY50 index was trading at 22,825.50, down 87.65 points, or 0.38%.

Stock market today: The domestic stock market once again slipped into the red in the early trade on Friday, February 21.

At 10:51 AM, the S&P BSE SENSEX was trading at 75,250.95, down 485.01 points, or 0.64%, while the NSE's NIFTY50 index was trading at 22,760.60, down 152.55 points, or 0.67%.

On the NIFTY50 index, 29 stocks were trading in the red and the remaining 21 in the green.

The top five gainers on the index were Shriram Finance, Hindalco Industries, L&T, Eicher Motors, and Bharti Airtel.
The top five losers were M&M, Dr Reddy's, Kotak Mahindra Bank, UltraTech Cement, and Tata Motors.

Stocks in news

Religare Enterprises: Shares of the company jumped up to over 9% to ₹244 apiece on the NSE as the Burman family on Thursday, February 20, acquired control of financial services firm Religare Enterprises and were designated as its promoters after almost 18 months of a takeover battle.

"We are grateful to our regulators, shareholders, and other stakeholders for their trust and confidence," the Burman family said in a statement.

Cipla: Shares were trading flat with a negative bias at ₹1,477.10 apiece on the BSE as the company, in its regulatory filing on Thursday, said that the United States Food and Drugs Administration (‘USFDA’) conducted a current Good Manufacturing Practices (‘cGMP’) inspection at the analytical testing facility of Sitec Labs, the wholly owned subsidiary of Cipla (‘Sitec’) located in Mahape, Navi Mumbai, from February 18 to 20, 2025.

On conclusion of the inspection, Sitec received two observations in Form 483. The company will work closely with the USFDA and remains committed to address these observations comprehensively within stipulated time, the filing added.

Broader Market

The BSE MidCap index was trading at 40,847.39 levels, down 7 points, or 0.02%, while the BSE SmallCap index was trading at 46,318.93, up 263.99 points, or 0.57%.

Sector Watch

Most sectoral indices were trading in the red in the morning trade. The biggest losers were auto stocks, followed by banking names.

The BSE AUTO index was trading at 48,613.55, down 805.82 points, or 1.63%.

On the other hand, metal stocks were trading in the green. The BSE METAL index was trading at 29,002.42, up 0.55%.

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) offloaded equities worth ₹3,311.55 crore on Thursday, according to exchange data.

In Asian markets, Seoul and Tokyo were trading lower while Shanghai and Hong Kong quoted in the positive territory.

US markets ended lower on Thursday.
