SENSEX falls over 370 points from day's high, NIFTY50 trades below 24,550; Titan hits record high

The Indian equity benchmarks erased early gains on Monday, August 10, as investor sentiment tuned subdued after crude oil jumped 1.7% to hit an intraday high of $85 per barrel after Iran on Sunday said that a deal with Oman defining new shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz was in its final stages but reiterated ‌that the waterway would only reopen once the United States met other conditions, news agency Reuters reported.

The SENSEX fell as much as 378 points from the day's highest level and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday low of 24,511 after hitting a high of 24,620.

As of 9:46 am, the SENSEX was down 158 points at 78,341 and NIFTY50 index declined 51 points to 24,520.

Asian markets were trading higher on Monday after a softer US jobs data report dashed hopes of interest rate hike by the US Federal Reserve going ahead.

Japan's Nikkei rose 2%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng advanced 0.7%, China's Shanghai Composite gained 0.4% and South Korea's KOSPI climbed 0.4%.

Back home, 10 of 15 major sector gauges compiled by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) were trading higher led by the NIFTY Auto index's 0.65% gain. NIFTY Metal, IT, Pharma, Private Bank, Healthcare and Consumer Durables indices also rose between 0.2% and 0.4%.

On the other hand, NIFTY PSU Bank, FMCG, Financial Services and Oil & Gas indices were trading lower.

Broader markets were trading on a mixed note as NIFTY Midcap 100 index advanced 0.2% while NIFTY Smallcap 100 index declined 0.07%.

Among the individual shares, Hitachi Energy rose as much as 9% to hit an intraday high of ₹35,480 after its net profit more than doubled to ₹294 crore in June quarter from ₹132 crore in the same period last year.

Its revenue from operations advanced 69% to ₹2,494 crore and orders surged 26% annually.

Titan was top gainer in the NIFTY50 index, the stock rose as much as 1.95% to hit a record high of ₹5,037.20 after it reported a 63% jump in consolidated net profit at ₹1,777 crore on Friday, August 7, for the first quarter of the current financial year (Q1 FY27) as compared to ₹1,091 crore in the same period last year.

The country's largest watch and jewellery retailer's revenue from operations increased 29% year-on-year (YoY) to ₹21,356 crore in the April-June period from ₹16,523 crore in the year-ago period.

For Q1 FY27, the consolidated total income came in at ₹20,753 crores, rising 40%, marking a strong start to the fiscal year and sustaining the growth momentum carried over from an exceptional FY26, the company said.

The company reported strong operational performance as its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 58% annually to ₹2,890 crore as against ₹1,830 crore in Q1 FY26.

Tech Mahindra, Grasim, Tata Steel, Cipla, Tata Motors PV, Mahindra & Mahindra, Sun Pharma, JSW Steel and Bajaj Auto also rose between 0.3% and 1.2%.

On the flip side, State Bank of India, HDFC Life, Adani Ports, Eternal, Power Grid, Hindalco, Ultratech Cement, Reliance Industries and Bajaj Finserv were top losers in the NIFTY50 index.

The overall market breadth was neutral as 1,502 shares were advancing while 1,402 were declining on the NSE.
