SENSEX, NIFTY50 close on a flat note; Titan ends at record high after strong Q1 earnings

The Indian equity benchmarks ended on a flat note on Monday, August 10, gains in Titan, Bajaj Finance, ICICI Bank, Infosys, Axis Bank and Larsen & Toubro were set off by losses in State Bank of India, Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, Eternal and ITC.

The SENSEX ended 43 points higher at 78,542 and NIFTY50 index advanced 13 points to close at 24,584.

Investor sentiment turned subdued after crude oil prices surged close to $85 per barrel after Iran on Sunday said that a deal with Oman defining new shipping lanes in the Strait of Hormuz was in its final stages but reiterated ‌that the waterway would only reopen once the United States met other conditions, news agency Reuters reported.

Eight of 15 major sector gauges compiled by the National Stock Exchange (NSE) ended higher led by the NIFTY Realty index's 1.35% gain. NIFTY IT, Media, Metal, Private Bank and Consumer Durables indices also fell between 0.25% and 0.4%.

On the other hand, NIFTY PSU Bank, Bank, Pharma, Healthcare and Auto indices ended lower.

Broader markets ended on a mixed note as NIFTY Midcap 100 index rose 0.6% while NIFTY Smallcap 100 index declined 0.27%.

Among the individual shares, Hitachi Energy rose as much as 11.62% to hit an intraday high of ₹36,366 after the company's net profit in April-June period surged 123% to ₹294 crore from ₹132 crore in the same period last year on the back of a surge in electrification in the country.

Its revenue from operations rose 69% to ₹2,494 crore in first quarter of current financial year from ₹1,479 crore a year earlier.

The Bengaluru-based company reported strong operational performance as its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) rose 135% to ₹364 crore and its EBITDA margin improved by 4.1 percentage points to 14.58% at the end of June quarter.

BEML rose as much as 7% to hit an intraday high of ₹1,915.35 after its loss narrowed to ₹34 crore at the end of June quarter from loss of ₹70 crore in the same period last year.

Titan was top gainer in the NIFTY50 index, the stock rose 3% to close at record high of ₹5,090 after it reported a 63% jump in consolidated net profit at ₹1,777 crore on Friday, August 7, for the first quarter of the current financial year (Q1 FY27) as compared to ₹1,091 crore in the same period last year.

The country's largest watch and jewellery retailer's revenue from operations increased 29% year-on-year (YoY) to ₹21,356 crore in the April-June period from ₹16,523 crore in the year-ago period.

For Q1 FY27, the consolidated total income came in at ₹20,753 crores, rising 40%, marking a strong start to the fiscal year and sustaining the growth momentum carried over from an exceptional FY26, the company said.

Tata Consumer Products, Bajaj Finance, Shriram Finance, Grasim, Tata Steel, Trent, Bharat Electronics, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank also rose between 0.75% and 2.44%.

On the flip side, State Bank of India, Eternal, ITC, Dr Reddy's Labs, TCS, Wipro, Coal India, Jio Financial Services, Bharti Airtel, Nestle India and Adani Ports were top losers in the NIFTY50 index.

The overall market breadth was neutral as 1,739 shares ended lower while 1,703 closed higher on the NSE.
