According to a regulatory filing, the Ministry of Coal, Government of India, conveyed the approval of the President of India for the appointment of the CMD.
Dr. Acharya assumed the position of CMD of NLC India on September 17, 2026, and will hold office for a period of five years, “subject to such terms and conditions as may be determined by Government of India”.
Consequently, he has relinquished from the position of Director (Finance) & CFO of NLC India with effect from the date of appointment (September 17).
Furthermore, Sanoj Kumar Jha, who was holding the additional charge of CMD has handed over the charge to Dr. Prasanna Kumar Acharya, the company stated.
During his three decade long career, Dr. Acharya has held key positions in organisations including GRIDCO, NTPC and Tata Power, the company said, adding that during his tenure at NLC India, he has led several initiatives in digital transformation and governance reforms, including ERP modernisation, centralisation of various Finance functions, adoption of AI-enabled systems and introduction of a Vendor Invoice Management System.
“His strategic leadership has also contributed to securing critical Government approvals and advancing initiatives relating to acquisition of coal and critical mineral blocks and renewable energy projects,” the firm stated.
The company added that he played an important role in steering joint ventures with various State utilities and in supporting NLCIL’s ambitious growth roadmap, which envisages achieving more than 20 GW of power generation capacity and over 100 MTPA of mining capacity by 2030.
In a separate regulatory filing dated Thursday, the Navratna PSU said that its wholly-owned subsidiary, NLC India Renewables Ltd (NIRL), incorporated a joint venture company (JVC) with PTC India Limited under the name of “NIRL PTC RENEWABLES LIMITED”.
The JVC was incorporated with the aim of setting up of green energy projects across India, with equity participation of 74:26, with 74% stake being held by NIRL and the remaining 26% by PTC India Ltd.
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs had issued a Certificate of Incorporation for the same on September 16, 2026.
Shares of NLC India closed 2.72% higher at ₹262.30 apiece on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Thursday, September 17. However, the development was announced after the markets closed.
The scrip has declined 3% in the past week and 5% over the month. However, on a year-to-date (YTD) basis, it has risen 2%.
While the stock hit a 52-week high of ₹387.80 per equity share on May 14, 2026, it touched a year’s low of ₹387 per unit on December 8, 2025.
