NIFTY50, SENSEX today: Wall Street cues, FII activity, key things to know before markets open on September 11

The Indian equity benchmarks are set to open lower on Friday, September 11, as indicated by NIFTY futures traded at Gift City in Gandhinagar. GIFT NIFTY futures fell 148 points to 23,332 amid weak cues from global markets.

The Indian equity benchmarks snapped their three-day losing streak on Thursday led by gains in index heavyweights like HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Bharti Airtel, Larsen & Toubro, Power Grid and Kotak Mahindra Bank.

For most part of the day benchmark indices traded in a narrow range as investor sentiment remained cautious tracking a surge in crude prices. The SENSEX traded in a band of 312 points and NIFTY50 index touched an intraday low of 23,380 and high of 23,495.

The SENSEX rose 138 points to close at 74,902.59 and NIFTY50 index advanced 46 points to close at 23,477.80.

Asian markets

Asian markets were trading sharply lower tracking a surge in crude oil and rising bond yields in the United States. Japan's Nikkei fell 2.96%, China's Shanghai Composite declined 2.04%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng index dropped 1.53% and South Korea's KOSPI tumbled 2.54%.

Crude oil update

Brent crude futures surged nearly 2% to $109.62 per barrel following biggest spike in attacks on shipping since the Iran war began fed worries among traders about further disruptions to already tight supplies, news agency Reuters reported.

Iran-aligned Houthis seized ​control of Yemen's port of Mocha on Thursday, posing a further threat to Red Sea traffic, while Gulf ⁠traffic remains restricted through the Strait of Hormuz as tanker attacks in the region have intensified in recent days.

Wall Street update

US stocks ended lower on Thursday after crude oil surged to highest level in more than two months while bond yields also surged on worries of rising inflation.

S&P 500 index declined 0.6%, Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6% and tech heavy Nasdaq index dropped 0.65%.

FII/DII activity

Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹438 crore on Thursday while domestic institutional investors bought stocks worth ₹1,025.85 crore, as per NSE data.

FIIs have so far this month sold shares worth ₹12,912 crore taking the total quantum of selling to ₹2,37,353 crore for 2026, data from NSDL showed.
