The Indian stock market ended lower after a volatile session on Thursday, November 6, erasing early gains as weakness in metal, media, and realty stocks weighed on sentiment. Persistent foreign fund outflows also kept investors cautious.

During intraday trading, NIFTY50 and SENSEX touched their highs of 25,679.15 and 83,846.35, respectively.
At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at the 83,311.01 level, declining 148.14 points, or 0.18%, while the NSE NIFTY50 fell 87.95 points, or 0.34%, to settle at 25,509.70.

According to exchange data, on Tuesday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹1,067.01 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities worth ₹1,202.90 crore on a net basis.

Globally, Asian stocks rebounded on Thursday, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street, as investors assessed the US Fed’s policy outlook and awaited key tariff rulings.

Japan's Nikkei rose 1.38%, South Korea's KOSPI advanced 0.55%, Hong Kong's Hang Seng jumped 2.03%, and Singapore's Straits Times gained 1.51%. Shanghai Composite also closed 0.96% higher.

On Wednesday, main indices on Wall Street ended higher following several upbeat economic updates and a steady flow of quarterly reports from US companies.

The S&P 500 rose 0.37%, the Dow Jones advanced 0.48%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq climbed 0.65%.

Here are the key developments of Thursday's session that you need to know

Market statistics

As many as 3,195 stocks traded on the NSE on Thursday. Out of this, 795 advanced and 2,304 stocks declined, while 96 scrips remained unchanged.

This indicated that the market breadth was in favour of declines.

A total of 51 stocks hit their 52-week highs, while 144 stocks touched their one-year lows. Besides, 71 stocks hit their upper circuit limits, and 81 touched their lower circuit bands on Thursday.

The market capitalisation of NSE-listed firms stood at ₹463.24 lakh crore at the close of the session, losing almost ₹4 lakh crore from the previous session.

India VIX, the volatility gauge, stood at 12.41 levels, slipping 1.91%.

Sectoral update

Nifty IT (0.18%) and Nifty Auto (0.06%) were the only gainers among sectors. Nifty Media led the sectoral losses, slipping 2.54%, followed by Nifty Metal (-2.07%), Nifty Consumer Durables (-1.98%), Nifty Realty (-1.51%), and Nifty PSU Bank (-0.62%).

Broader market

The broader markets ended also lower, with the Nifty Smallcap 100 index dipping 1.39% to close at 18,105, while the Nifty Midcap 100 index slipped 0.95% to settle at 59,468.60.

Top gainers and losers

On the NIFTY50, 33 stocks ended in the red, while 17 gained on Thursday.

Grasim Industries was the biggest laggard, declining 6.42%. Hindalco Industries (-5.39%), Adani Enterprises (-4.5%), Power Grid (-3.15%) and Eternal (-2.62%) were the other top losers.

On the flip side, Asian Paints (4.64%), Reliance Industries (1.47%), UltraTech Cement (1.04%), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.95%) and Wipro (0.90%) were the biggest gainers on the 50-share index.
