The Indian stock market ended flat down after a volatile session on Tuesday, December 30, as metal, PSU bank and auto stocks rallied. Weak global cues and persistent foreign fund outflows kept investors’ sentiment dampened.

At close, the S&P BSE SENSEX stood at the 84,675.08 level, falling 20.46 points, or 0.02%, while the NSE's NIFTY50 index lost 3.25 points, or 0.01%, to the 25,938.85 level.
During the intraday period, both the SENSEX and NIFTY50 touched lows of 84,470.94 and 25,878, respectively.

Meanwhile, metal stocks outperformed on Tuesday, powered by a broad-based buying interest in shares of metal companies.

According to exchange data, on Monday, the foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹2,759.89 crore, while the domestic institutional investors (DIIs) bought equities worth ₹2,643.85 crore on a net basis.

On the global front, most of the indices in Asia closed lower as they snapped their seven-day winning streak following a technology-led selloff on Wall Street overnight.

Japan's Nikkei closed 0.21% lower, China's Shanghai Composite was flat, South Korea's KOSPI lost 0.15%, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended up 0.77%.

On Wall Street, the main indices ended lower on Monday as heavyweight technology stocks retreated from last week's gains.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.51%, the S&P 500 index dropped 0.35%, and the tech-heavy Nasdaq index slipped 0.5%.

Market statistics

As many as 3,244 stocks traded on the NSE on Tuesday. Out of this, 1,410 advanced and 1,723 declined, while 111 scrips remained unchanged.

This indicates that the market's breadth is favourable towards declines.

A total of 49 stocks hit their 52-week highs, while 143 stocks touched their one-year lows. Besides, 72 stocks hit their upper circuit limits, and 58 touched their lower circuit bands on Tuesday.

The market capitalisation of NSE-listed companies stood at ₹469.19 lakh crore by the end of the session.

The volatility index India VIX slumped 0.43% to close at 9.68 levels.

Broader market

The NIFTY Midcap 100 index ended at 59,914.25 levels, falling 0.15%, while the NIFTY Smallcap 100 gauge settled 0.28% lower at 17,518.95 levels.

Sectoral watch

Among sectors, Nifty Realty took the lead among losers, declining 0.84%, followed by Nifty Consumer Durables (-0.81%), Nifty IT (-0.74%), Nifty Oil and Gas (-0.31%), and Nifty FMCG (-0.29%).

On the contrary, Nifty Metal (2.03%), Nifty PSU Bank (1.69%), Nifty Auto (1.08%) and Nifty Private Bank (0.01%) were the gainers.

Top gainers and losers

On Tuesday, 28 stocks declined on the NIFTY50 index, while 22 settled in green.

Eternal was the biggest laggard, declining 2.21%, followed by Eicher Motors (-1.92%), Tata Consumer Products (-1.79%), Max Healthcare (-1.64%) and InterGlobe Aviation (-1.52%).

On the flip side, Bajaj Auto (2.32%), Hindalco Industries (2.12%), Shriram Finance (1.99%), Tata Steel (1.96%) and Mahindra & Mahindra (1.89%) were the most contributing stocks on the 50-share index.
