In the month of May, a total of 6.10 lakh Renewable Energy Certificates (REC) were traded, though their volumes declined 65% YoY, according to a regulatory filing dated June 3. Its trading sessions were held on May 13 and May 29, with a clearing price of ₹400 per REC. Its sell bids declined by 85.3% YoY, leading to a rise in clearing prices in May 2026.
India’s energy consumption touched 164.98 billion units (BUs) in May 2026, registering a year-on-year growth of 11.5%. During the month, India’s peak power demand surged to an all-time high of 270.82 gigawatts (GW).
In the day-ahead market (DAM), strong demand drove buy bids up 77% YoY, while sell bids rose by 30% YoY. Furthermore, the average market-clearing price in DAM stood at ₹4.88 per unit, up 18.3% YoY in May 2026, driven by a significant increase in power demand.
Its DAM, which includes HP-DAM, achieved 4,417 MU volume during the month under review, marking a 24.9% YoY surge from 3,535 MU volume in May 2025.
Its real-time electricity market (RTM) recorded a 15.9% YoY jump in volume to 5,529 MU in May 2026, compared with 4,770 MU in the year-ago period. Additionally, the RM clearing price soared 21.2% YoY to stand at ₹4.16 per unit for the reporting month.
Its day-ahead contingency and term-ahead market (TAM), including HPTAM, comprising contingency, daily & weekly, and monthly contracts up to three months, traded 2,004 MU in May’26 as compared to 1,726 MU volume in May’25, an increase of 16.1% YoY
The IEX Green market, comprising the green day-ahead and green term-ahead market segments, saw volumes growing 13% YoY to 1,034 MU in May 2026, in comparison to 915 MU in the same period of the preceding year.
The weighted average price in the green day-ahead market (G-DAM) remained largely flat YoY at ₹3.60 per unit in May 2026.
Shares of IEX closed 1.57% lower at ₹123.28 per unit on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) on Wednesday, June 3, ahead of the monthly update announcement.
The scrip has fallen nearly 3% in the past week and more than 1% over the month. On a year-to-date basis, it has declined 7%.
While the stock hit a 52-week high of ₹215.40 per equity share on June 9, 2025, it touched a year’s low of ₹114.60 apiece on March 30, 2026.
