Great Eastern Shipping Co. shares surged more than 3% on Tuesday, August 25, as investors reacted to the company’s board of directors announcing their plans to consider a share repurchase or buyback programme in the upcoming meeting later this week.

As per the NSE filings, Great Eastern Shipping Co. (GE Shipping) has scheduled a board meeting later this week on Thursday, August 27, to consider the company’s buyback programme.

“The board of directors of the company, at their meeting scheduled on Thursday, August 27, 2026, shall consider a proposal to buyback the fully paid-up equity shares of the Company in accordance with SEBI regulations,” the company informed the exchanges.

NSE data also showed that Great Eastern Shipping shares surged 3.5% to touch an intraday high of ₹1,380 apiece during the trading session on Tuesday, in comparison to ₹1,333 apiece at the previous equity market close.

After the day’s high level, GE Shipping shares retracted some of its gains, trading 1.3% higher at ₹1,350 apiece during the afternoon market hours on August 25.

Due to the update, the trading window for key company personnel will remain closed from August 25 to 29, 2026, as per the guidelines of the Code of Conduct for Prohibition of Insider Trading.

GE Shipping will inform the shareholders about the outcome soon after the conclusion of the board meeting on August 27, as per the exchange filing.

159% jump in Q1 profits

While the company’s board aims to focus on providing returns to investors via a buyback offer, GE Shipping’s share repurchase move comes after a strong performance in the April to June quarter earnings for FY27.

The exchange filings showed that Great Eastern Shipping recorded a 159% year-on-year (YoY) rise in consolidated net profits to ₹1,309 crore, in comparison to ₹505 crore in the same period a year earlier.

The strong Q1 profits are due to major support from the 67% YoY rise in revenue from core operations to ₹2,005 crore in the first quarter, compared to ₹1,201 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

The company’s operational-level earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortisation (EBITDA) advanced 108% YoY to ₹1,338 crore, compared to ₹643 crore in the same period a year earlier.

Filing data also showed that the EBITDA margins expanded to 66.70% in the June quarter of FY27, compared to 53.49% in the same period a year ago.

So far in the calendar year 2026, the stock has risen 21%, but GE Shipping shares have declined around 6.1% in the last one month. The exchange data also showed that the company’s stock was trading 3.6% higher in the last five sessions.

Shares of GE Shipping surged to their 52-week high of ₹1,798 on May 19, 2026, while the 52-week low was at ₹922.50 on September 1, 2025. The company’s market capitalisation (m-cap) was at ₹19,257 crore as of the trading session on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
