As per the Hindu calendar, festivals are set according to the lunar calendar, which means they are tithi-based. It’s not like the regular Gregorian calendar.

A tithi, which means date in English, is a lunar day (the time it takes for the Moon to move 12° relative to the Sun). Tithis don’t exactly line up with our usual 24-hour solar days; a tithi can start and end at any time of day, even spanning two calendar days.

This is why festivals sometimes shift or overlap, and why Diwali can fall on two days or why both Chhoti Diwali and Diwali can be on the same day.

Many people are wondering when Diwali will be celebrated this year, on October 20 or 21.

In 2025, the Chaturdashi tithi (for Chhoti Diwali) and the Amavasya tithi (for main Diwali) overlap within the same 24-hour period, which is why both will be celebrated on October 20, 2025.

As both tithis occur on the same Gregorian date, they fall on the same day in many calendars. However, some regions will still celebrate them separately by timing (morning/evening). Most regions in the country are expected to celebrate Diwali on October 20, according to this calendar:

  • Amavasya Tithi: Begins on October 20, 2025 at 03:44 PM, ends on October 21, 2025 at 05:54 PM
  • Lakshmi Puja Muhurat: October 20, 2025, from 07:08 PM to 08:18 PM
