What was in Iran's counter-proposal that Trump dismissed as 'totally unacceptable'?

SUMMARY

Tehran’s proposal reportedly sought an end to hostilities in the region, compensation for war damages, guarantees against future attacks, lifting of sanctions and recognition of its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

The White House is reportedly seeking a one-page memorandum of understanding that would end hostilities and establish a framework for negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.

US President Donald Trump on Sunday rejected Iranian response to the American proposal seeking an end to the conflict, calling it “totally unacceptable.”

Iran had submitted a response seeking an end to the conflict across the region, including in Lebanon, while demanding compensation for war damages and asserting its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

According to Iranian state media, Tehran's response also called on Washington to end its naval blockade, provide guarantees against future attacks, lift sanctions and remove restrictions on Iranian oil exports.

Trump, however, swiftly rejected the proposal.

"I have just read the response from Iran's so-called 'Representatives.' I don't like it -- TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE!" Trump said in a post on Truth Social, without elaborating.

Earlier in the day, Trump accused Iran of "playing games" with the United States and the wider international community, saying Tehran had delayed negotiations for decades.

The latest exchange has dimmed hopes for a breakthrough in talks and reignited fears over disruptions to global oil supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow waterway through which roughly one-fifth of the world's oil passes.

Brent crude rose 3.17% to USD 104.50 a barrel on Sunday, while US West Texas Intermediate crude gained 3.21% to USD 98.48 a barrel.

A senior Iranian military official warned that countries enforcing sanctions on Tehran could "face problems" when their vessels transit the Strait of Hormuz, according to state media.

The United States has also maintained a naval blockade on Iranian vessels and ports.

Reports said US forces on Friday fired at Iranian-flagged oil tankers attempting to circumvent the restrictions.

Since the conflict began, Brent crude has risen by nearly USD 20 per barrel, while US crude is up by about USD 10.

Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke with Trump on Sunday evening after Iran submitted its response to Washington's latest ceasefire proposal, according to media reports citing Israeli officials.

Video circulating on social media showed Netanyahu leaving a meeting with Druze and Circassian community leaders to take the call.

In an interview with CBS' "60 Minutes" scheduled to air on Sunday, Netanyahu said there was still "work to be done" regarding Iran.
