SUMMARY
One of the leading food delivery and quick commerce companies in India, Swiggy, recently launched a flash sale selling onions for ₹39 per kg after a customer’s request went viral, gaining sympathy from many.
Onions, once sold at ₹30 to ₹40 per kg in major cities including Delhi and Mumbai, are now being sold for ₹80 to ₹90 per kg
Swiggy Instamart on Friday, November 28, launched a flash sale on onions in Delhi-NCR, selling them for ₹39 per kg from 7 pm to 8 pm, after a customer requested a restaurant to send extra onions with the order as they were getting too expensive.
On a Reddit post, someone recently shared a photo of a bill where the customer had written this in notes, “Bhaiyya, please send round cut onions bhaiyya, please. Onions bhot costly hai, I can't buy, please send onions bhaiya thoda,” explaining that the prices of onions have shot up and they can’t buy them.
Onions, once sold at ₹30 to ₹40 per kg in major cities including Delhi and Mumbai, are now being sold for ₹80 to ₹90 per kg. Inflation is impacting staple items in cities with prices touching roofs. Now that tomato prices have settled down a little after a major increase in prices, onions have become the next woe for people around the country.
Swiggy’s co-founder Phani Kishan A posted on social media platform X, saying that Swiggy will be offering onions at ₹39 per kg to offer some relief to the citizens. “We feel your pain,” he said, adding that while the food delivery and quick commerce platform can’t change the vegetable prices, they’re offering a flash sale for a day, selling onions for nearly half the price.
Reportedly, the sale was successful and ended exactly at 8 pm. Many people commented on Kishan’s post and it went viral, with people all across the country sympathising with the customer.
