Saudi Arabia's 1-km Jeddah Tower reaches 107th floor, set to eclipse Burj Khalifa upon completion

Construction of Saudi Arabia's Jeddah Tower, which is set to become the world's tallest building, has reached a height of 430 metres after the completion of the 107th floor.

The latest progress was highlighted in an infographic shared by Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, chairman of Kingdom Holding Company and the principal investor behind the project, on July 26. The Saudi prince also recently visited the construction site.

According to the update, the tower has achieved about 43% of its structural height and has around 570 metres of construction remaining before it surpasses the planned 1,000-metre mark.

Once completed, Jeddah Tower will overtake Dubai's 828-metre Burj Khalifa as the tallest building in the world.

The mixed-use skyscraper will house offices, a Four Seasons hotel, serviced apartments and luxury residences, besides an observation deck and other facilities planned for the upper levels.

Engineer John Peronto, managing principal at Thornton Tomasetti and project manager for Jeddah Tower, told Newsweek in June that construction was moving "very aggressively" towards the upper observation level, known as the "sky terrace", around the 160th floor.

Peronto said the project was roughly 60 weeks away from reaching that milestone and that construction was progressing at an estimated pace of about four metres per week.

At the current pace, the tower is expected to reach the 500-metre mark in around 25 weeks.

"I'm sure we will celebrate as a team when we get to 500 metres," he told the publication.

Jeddah Tower has been designed by architects Adrian Smith and Gordon Gill of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture.

Smith had earlier designed the Burj Khalifa while working at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill.

While the project is set to reclaim the record for the world's tallest building, Gordon Gill said height was no longer the foremost objective.

"Sustainability is what matters to me the most... to get to the point where we're contributing with buildings and turn them into assets, versus looking at them as deficits," Gill told Newsweek.
