Bank holiday on August 26: Banks shut in these states on Eid-e-Milad; Aug 28 also holiday in 9 states

Banks will remain closed in several states and the national capital on account of Eid-e-Milad, also known as Milad-un-Nabi, marking the birthday of Prophet Mohammad.

According to RBI’s holiday calendar, bank branches will remain closed in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Telangana, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, New Delhi, Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh.

Milad-un-Nabi is observed by Muslims to commemorate the birth of Prophet Mohammad.

This year, Eid-e-Milad also coincides with Thiruvonam, the main day of the Onam festival celebrated in Kerala.

The holidays are part of the Reserve Bank of India's bank holiday calendar and vary across states depending on local festivals and occasions.

While the physical bank branches will remain closed, digital banking services like internet banking, mobile banking and ATMs will operate as usual.

Bank holiday on August 28

Banks will also remain closed on August 28 in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Chhattisgarh.

The holidays on August 28 are on account of Raksha Bandhan, Pang-Lhabsol, the Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi, Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi and Ayyankali Jayanthi.

The August 28 holiday is for Raksha Bandhan in Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh; Pang-Lhabsol in Sikkim; the Friday following Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi in Jammu and Kashmir; Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi and Ayyankali Jayanthi in Kerala.

Pang-Lhabsol is celebrated in Sikkim to honour Mount Kanchenjunga as the state's guardian deity.

Sri Narayana Jayanthi, celebrated on Chathayam day during the Onam season, marks the birthday of Narayana Guru, a social reformer who fought against the caste system.

Ayyankali Jayanthi, marking the birth anniversary of renowned social reformer Ayyankali, is celebrated on August 28 every year.

Being the fifth Saturday of the month, banks will remain open on August 29.
